Sleep Deprivation leads to problems with relationship especially for children and teens. Research shows that not getting enough sleep increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart diseases, diabetes, and obesity. If kids get more sleep they will be more 'awake' at school and pay more attention in classes.

According to (Sleep Adolescent) "Teenagers who are sleep deprived are also more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors, such as drinking, driving fast, and engaging in other dangerous activities." This shows that kids that don't get enough amount of sleep are more likely to take risks that will have a negative effect on their health.

Mental disorders are more commonly found in people who are sleep deprived. Depression is common among people who are constantly tired and stressed. According to neurocorecenters.com, "These studies have found that disturbances in sleep may actually be working as a trigger, raising the risk of developing a mental health condition." (How Sleep Affects Mental Health)

Students who get more sleep often have better test scores. The Altantic.com states that, "Long-term Deprivation has also been shown to be a factor in lower test scores, decreased attention span, tardiness, concentration, and overall academic achievement." (Jessica Lahey) Sleep ultimately helps students perform better in school.

School starting later can increase academic performances and decrease the risk of mental conditions.

Counterclaim/Rebuttal (Jennifer)

While some claim that later school times will not give children more sleep, the opposite is true. According to the national sleep foundation , “Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function best.” (“Teens and Sleep”). This fact is undisputable, but many wonder why later start times would be better. Why can’t students go to bed at 9 and sleep until 6:30? That would be enough sleep. However, this logic is not sound. Many students are involved in afterschool activities. Combine this with the all the homework they are assigned and it is nearly impossible to go to sleep at 9. Another reason why this logic is incorrect is because, “...as children approach and go through puberty, their brains begin producing the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin on a delayed schedule, making it difficult for them to feel tired before 11 p.m.” (Macmillan). This piece of evidence supports why school starting times should be no earlier than 8:30 am. Since teens don’t fall asleep immediately, a student going to bed at 11 would probably fall asleep at around 11:30 pm. This means that to get the sufficient sleep, the student would need to sleep until anywhere between 7:30 am and 9:30 am. With schools starting earlier than 8:30 am, students have a hard time getting their full sleep while getting to school on time. What this suggests is that earlier school starting times do indeed contribute to lack of sleep, which can cause many problems. Overall, despite what some believe, later school starting times will allow students to obtain sufficient sleep and reduce the dangerous consequences accompanying lack of sleep.

Not only does going to school early impact them mentally, but also emotionally as well. As (Depression,Anxiety, and Fatigue) Article states ‘’A 2004 study of 2,259 students, aged 11 to 14 years, found that students who obtained less sleep in sixth grade exhibited lower initial self-esteem and higher initial levels of depressive symptoms.’’ Which has a big emotional impact. Also, as (Early morning classes, sleepy students, and risky behaviors) states " Research shows that tired adolescents and adults are easily cranky, easily frustrated, and overly emotional. This can contribute to constant tension between family members" Which could not only affect their emotional health but a well as their family. So, in order to reduce emotional stress school starting later would make them less cranky,as well as getting " Overly emotional".

In conclusion, school starting times should be no earlier than 8:30 am because of the effect it has on kids’ physical, mental, and emotional health. Despite what some believe, making school starting times later will greatly benefit the health of the students. Emotionally, it will reduce the risk of family problems if all students have sufficient sleep. It will also make sure that there is a smaller chance of being physically hurt in the long term because the students will be more alert. Finally, it will cause student scores to be raised and allow students to perform better in school. The number one priority in schools is the health of students, and in regards to this priority, school starting times should be no earlier than 8:30.
