Advances in RPM

Opinion:
Although this idea has been in use for many years with Holter monitoring and nurse hotlines, remote patient management (RPM) is advancing faster than we can blink our eyes. With the use of certain monitoring programs, patients can use mobile devices and other tools to monitor their health and send the data directly to their physicians in real time. These programs provide tools and resources to help patients manage their own health conditions from home, reducing the frequency and time spent in offices and hospitals. They also help catch deterioration by tracking trends. RPM is being used for many chronic conditions including diabetes, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, coronary artery disease, asthma, dementia and falls, and even infertility. "Monitoring programs can collect a wide range of health data from the point of care, such as vital signs, weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and electrocardiograms" (Center for Connected Health Policy, 2017).
