The house's emotions change the longer it operates without people, "[shutting] up its windows and [drawing] its shades in an old-maidenly preoccupation with self-protection," implying that it feels lonely and defensive despite being a machine. When the house sets on fire, it "[shudders], oak bone on bone, its bared skeleton cringing from the heat, its wire, its nerves revealed as if a surgeon had torn the skin off to let the red veins and capillaries quiver in the scaled air." At this point, the house no longer has just a human personality, but also a body and internal organs comparable to that of a human.
