Ben Ratliff's Chapter 14 of "Every Song Ever" discusses the closeness of musicians to each other and how it is shown in the music itself. Hearing the dynamics of a connection in music is essentially important in having the audience connect to the music, as well. Ben Ratliff gives many examples of this concept such as the Beatles. Ratliff describes their song "When I Get Home" as "one of the most carnal, least patient of their early period". The song sounds as if Paul McCartney and John Lennon are singing eye to eye and therefore it gives the listeners a sense of intimacy and closeness listening to the song. Ratliff further discusses how sometimes it can be hard for artists to display the concept of closeness in their music, but having two musicians connect in their music can display the concept to the audience and have them connect.
The idea of closeness between band members and in music makes me think of the song "Say Something" by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera. The two begin the song by singing duet style but then sing together on the chorus with a lot of intimacy and closeness. Ratliff calls the idea of two people singing closely in tandem as "Entrainment".
