Though there are more within Southeast Asia, the major influences of the universalizing religions are evident throughout its cultural landscape.  From merchants, using trade to influence trading areas using religion, or missionaries, traveling through land, influencing their religion to traveled land, their impact has been evident.  Christianity specifically, has traveled through continents, dominating lands, and spreading. Their impacts to others are through architectural influences, or teaching, or culture, very diverse but specific, such as churches, or mosques, or Buddhist temples.

Vietnamese families, though is dominated by multiple universalizing religions, have a slight difference in family structure. In which they contain three or four generations of family, and where the daughters join their husband’s family once married.  Children are venerated, because the parent’s traditional belief is that the children will be the cause of wealth and will provide for the family in the future. Fathers are the heads of every house, and traditionally they have provided no physical care for children. They provide food, housing and education, but emotional and physical affections are not common.  Mothers are the first teachers in that they teach the difference between right and wrong. They also learn at a very oung age of what family life is, and fathers are the dealers of punishments when children commit wrong doings.

Cultural interactions can be found throughout the family traditions, although some have varied differences in cultural practices, their basic fundamentals are the same. Families are the most important systems throughout the region. Families are a traditional importance, and children are major influences, in that they are depended upon for future care. Daughters are married away and husbands or fathers are the dominant figure in a traditional home. These cultural characteristics spread or influenced each other and spread.

Nomadic or seminomadic groups were difficult to govern and construct a permanent government with a stable and organized bureaucracy, and to be able to tax efficiently. Although settled population did not guarantee strong government, since taxing and giving authority to remote islands or highlands were very difficult.
