I found this summary from a BC report on remote PD for teachers really helpful. We are delivering a BC-funded Teacher Activity Groups project with English teachers in Central Vietnam now and find the following strategies work well in terms of engaging our teachers, many of which are in line with those suggested in the BC report:
- providing basic digital induction and training. We find this essential to start with as we originally overestimated our teachers’ digital literacy levels. Before our first TAG meetings we delivered a technology workshop to walk the teachers through the use of some digital tools we would be using such as Padlet, Kahoot, Mentimeter, Googledoc, Googleclassroom. We also encouraged them to use these tools in their own class. Interestingly, some teachers had already used these tools and they shared with us how they had managed to make the best use of the free versions of the tools, inspiring other teachers in the TAGs to do the same.
- giving teachers small pre-meeting tasks to do to get them prepared for the discussion during TAG meetings, and providing specific post-meeting tasks for teachers to try out in their classroom
- employing an informal online communication tool for administrative purposes and to connect more easily with teachers (we use Zalo in Vietnam as Whatsapp is not as popular). These chat tools are also low-bandwith and do not require much data consumption.
- having an asynchronous platform to organise and materials. We have been using Googleclassroom and it has worked quite well. We also ask our teachers to submit their postmeeting tasks here. Googleclassroom also enables simple and easy feedback-giving functions.
