He used the Mercalli scale before he invented the Richter scale, which was okay at that time, but wasn't able to fully accurately determine the type of earthquake. He typically worked with magnitudes of earthquakes. He invented the Richter Scale which used an absolute value of an earthquake’s intensity. (Ranking for 1-10 and each increment was 5 times stronger than the previous number. He was able to provide earthquake building codes requiring that a building over 30 feet is not safe. His working on the Richter Scale has made it possible for scientists able to calculate magnitudes of earthquakes more accurately and in turn saving future lives since they can prepare more precisely.

Furthermore, they tend to focus on issues about climate change, forests, oceans, food, detox, nuclear, and peace with disarmament.

It’s an agency created in the 1970’s by Richard Nixon in order to address growing environmental problems. It was mostly started by the outrage people had for the large amount of harmful smoke caused by factories. It first started off as NEPA (Natural Environment Protection Agency) and evolved to EPA. It now regulates and requires companies and states to abide to environmental regulations. This organization/policy has been an important factor to contributing to the US environment, because without them, many companies would have used up many resources and harmed the environment a long time ago.

After an 9.0 magnitude earthquake happened in Japan, a 15 meter tsunami struck a nuclear plant in Fukushima that caused a nuclear meltdown. 3 reactors had to be cooled and to prevent more radioactive releases. The meltdown while it did not explode, caused nuclear energy to burn through the ground and into the water and ocean. This is a problem because it causes the water system to be harmful and also has mutated the animals in the ocean and killed a lot in the process. 2 natural disasters that chained react to another disaster caused the tragic destruction and deaths in Japan and has changed lots of the environment.

This incident was an oil spill caused by the company Exxon Valdez. About 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into Prince WIlliam Sound. The spill covered large amount of the ocean, some even reaching beaches. The oil covered some ocean animals to the extent they couldn’t swim or suffocated due to being covered so much. There were about 28 types of plants, animals, and aquatic habitats that were harmed in the process and some still trying to recover to this day. The incident has caused oil to go top places that oil doesn't belong and greatly impacted the ecosystem as many animals were hurt and made it harder to live in the habitats.

A lot of pollution by factories polluted the city of London. The toxic fog caused many deaths, about 4,000, as not only did it harm people’s body, but the smog was so thick that people couldn’t see anything. Due to the fact that the air was warmer than on the ground, the smog wasn't able to rise and their was no wind to blow away it causing the smog to stay put in London. People had to wear gas masks to prevent the toxic smog from entering their system as they roamed in the street, It sparked regulations, the Clean Air Act, so that there were smoke-free zones and also restricted the burning of coal in certain areas..

Love Canal was an incident that occurred when Hooker Chemical Company dug a canal and dumped chemical waste nearby Love Canal town. It caused harmful health effects for the citizens and they were questioning why people were getting illnesses and dying. They eventually found out and it outraged many of the citizens as many people died. People protested against the company and it was made aware of in the US by media. Eventually the government had to relocated the families, but the town still has toxic substances leeching in the area and some even refuse to be relocated. The activism sparked many other people to also engage in activism against toxic waste disposal sites as it was effecting their surroundings too.

All of these events are tied together by disasters, both naturally or anthropogenic. They all involve in disasters harming the ecosystem and many organizations and people contribute to helping prevent future disasters by helping people be aware of their actions and also provide resources for them to use to prepare beforehand. These disasters show that we have to be a united front against them in order to prevent many major losses to society. This particular topic is important to me because I'm the type of person that likes to help people and this way more people can be more mindful of their surroundings to prevent some of these disasters if not all. Ever since I was kid and experienced earthquakes back in California, I've been fascinated by the topic of natural disasters and makes me want to contribute something to help people out suffering in disasters.
