The romance all children sought after was a princess and prince relationship from the fairy tales. Typically, in princess fairy tales, the happy endings often occur with a romantic relationship flourishing between two characters. "And they lived happily ever after." There is a reason it says "they" instead of she. Together. To some, romance may shape fairy tales, and ultimately, in some stories, the only reason princesses become royalty is through romance. However, in "The Little Mermaid" and "When the Clock Strikes," evil magic undermines these relationships and puts them to the test. It influences the romance aspect, as wicked spells and curses attempt to destroy the happy endings. "The Little Mermaid" is a story by Hans Christian Andersen, which follows a mermaid's attempt to chase after a prince by becoming human. The mermaid is cursed by a "sea witch" to trade her legs for her voice. In "When the Clock Strikes," a witch and her daughter inflict curses on their town. The mother's evil magic is revealed to her husband, and he kills her, leaving the daughter to promise she had no involvement in the magic. The daughter continues to curse the Duke. The use of evil magic in both of these stories ends up interrupting the romantic connections in the stories. This can bring up the question of how the use of evil magic in "The Little Mermaid" and "When the Clock Strikes" affects the underlying theme of romance. Others can challenge this idea, in which romantic connections are influenced by physical attraction. In both stories, lovers are brought together by physical attraction. However, what keeps them apart in both stories is done by the curses and spells revolving around them. They can even be seen as forbidden lovers due to this.
