Groups U-Z (sec 04): On human rights and marginalized populations by Judi Freeman

Are there populations within your countries that have fewer rights or are treated less fairly and/or equally than others? Are there populations that are “advantaged” or “privileged” and populations that are “disadvantaged” or “lack privilege”? How would you describe those populations? How are they treated? How do YOU think they should be treated?

In the USA, there are several marginalized peoples. New immigrants are very disadvantaged because they must create their own connections in America after arriving with nothing from their old countries. Language and culture barriers can result in many disadvantages in employment and other areas.
Yet, people who have been here for generations are also discriminated against based on their race. African Americans are systemically oppressed in America. Majority black schools are underfunded while their communities are constantly monitored by police, resulting in excessive force and arrests, separating families and perpetuating intergenerational trauma.
I believe that our corrupt system needs to be fixed to give equal opportunities to all people in America regardless of race and other forms of identification.

I wouldn’t technically say fewer rights but there is 100% a population in America that is treated less fairly and equally than other populations in America. The populations that are privileged and more advantaged than others are white people and the populations that are disadvantaged and lack privilege are people of color. People of color are treated differently through institutional racism, which is a form of racism that is embedded as normal practice within society or an organization. They face problems in America that white people in America do not. I think they should obviously be treated equally and people need to recognize that racism still exists in America.

In the US, I would definitely say that minorities are treated less fairly compared to White Americans. I am an Asian-American and from my personal experiences, I feel as though I miss out on a lot of opportunities because I am not white. The saying "white privilege" needs to be recognized by others that it is a legitimate issue. Immigrants typically have traveled from faraway lands and faced many challenges just to get to the US. The fact that many refugees are being denied access to America saddens me. America was built on the backs of immigrants. The fact that we still discriminate and grant smaller opportunities to different people makes me think that we are going backwards as a country. African Americans are still being discriminated and are systemically oppressed in America. Asian Americans are being called racial slurs because of their connection to their Asian roots. Hispanics and Latinos are being told to go back to where they came from, even if some were born here. This happens constantly and I believe that we need to fix our criminal justice system and to educate others that immigrants do not mean 'stealing jobs' and that we all deserve equal rights. I really hope that one day our country will finally treat people with equality and with the respect they deserve.

This padlet seems to be very fitting for the work we are doing in class right now. For those who are not in my class, we just finished a project analyzing race/racism in Boston. The biggest take away that I have from class is that racism is prominent in Boston and has been for awhile. This is particularly racism against people of color. People of color are a have been segregated against here in Boston, and today they are victim to disproportionately high rates of police brutality. Although this has been an issue at the fore front of our society lately (as it should be), we can not forget about the other groups who are facing inequality as well. These groups may include members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and all immigrants. The most privileged population of people in America is that population of white males. They hold the most power here in Boston and the US. Many times members of these populations face injustice in our justice system. This to me is the saddest part because our justice system is supposed to be a safe and fair place. Other times they face inequality in education systems. Education is something that should be distributed fairly among all people. Everybody deserves the same amount of respect and respect is shown when everybody is presented with the same amount of opportunity.

There are several different populations in the United States that are treated less fairly or equally than others. As many people have mentioned, people of color have systemic barriers that are put up to prevent them from succeeding. The criminal justice system disproportionately incarcerates people of color, and they are more likely to receive longer sentences than a white person for committing the same crime. Being incarcerated also strips former prisoners of many of their rights. Not only is it difficult to get back on their feet, find a job, and make a living, but if they have been charged with a felony (a more serious crime) they are no longer allowed to vote, no longer allowed to serve on a jury, and they lose other rights as well. While the recent Black Lives Matter protests have brought these issues more attention they still need to be addressed. As Tiffany and Leah also mentioned, immigrants are another group that are not treated fairly in the US, and as Sophie mentioned, so are members of the LGBT+ community. There are a lot of different types of privilege; white privilege, male privilege, heterosexual privilege, middle-upper class privilege, etc. In our society those who are the most “advantaged” are white, heterosexual, cisgendered, middle-upper class men. There is a lot of work to be done to fix our criminal justice system and the many other issues in our country, but we all must work towards achieving equal opportunities for everyone.

There are different populations that are treated less fairly and equally than others. I think people of color are often treated less fairly than others. We've seen incidents where people of color being accused for actions they didn't do. This usually isn't just a case of mistaken identification, but rather a case of racism or stereotyping A white person is less likely to receive the same sentence as a person of color. A person of color is more likely to receive a longer sentence than a white person. As we saw in the presentations, people of color can be stereotyped often. I think the sentence they receive should be based on their actions and not their race. I think also immigrants are also because they have to create their own new life here, often with nothing from their old countries.

The United States is filled with minority groups who have been discriminated against since coming to America, and are still facing prejudice today. African Americans are systemically oppressed and “lack privilege” by having to live in a country that is still systemically racist with its racial profiling, hate groups, lack of government representation, etc. Indigenous peoples also face high rates of poverty among other problems due to an unsympathetic government that doesn’t help them. America also facilitates an anti-immigration mindset, especially cultivated by the policies of President Trump, which leads to stereotyping and discrimination. The LGBTQ+ community has been long trying to stand for equal rights, which are only now slowly being granted. There are countless other specific groups being treated less fairly in America, and there are countless types of privileges. All of us Americans need to understand what our privileges are and use them to better the lives of those disenfranchised.

Here in the United States, there are surely populations that are treated as "less than" compared to their privileged counterparts. Usually it is people of color, or non white populations that are at some sort of disadvantage in this country. In the case of Black Americans, they have faced hundreds of years worth of systemic racism and oppression. In the case of new wave immigrants, they have to deal with things like exploitation of labor, for fear that they may be deported. In the case of indigenous peoples, they must live in a country that rarely acknowledges that they operate on stolen land. That was just to name a few examples. I feel as though, speaking as a minority myself, that those who are not white or even sometimes "white-passing" have to work extra hard to even get on the same playing field or to prove ourselves in this society. These populations should be acknowledged not just for their existence but also for their struggles. The different groups within the marginalized populations should also come together and uplift themselves by sharing experiences can help these groups better understand each other (as I think that there is a lot of dangerous argument about who has had it worse in life). That being said people who do have privilege and power should use it to help uplift these disadvantaged populations even more, such as through educating others.

The United States has many populations that are treated less fairly than others, and this has occurred since the beginning of our country when we took over the land from Native Americans and discriminated against them. The majority of people that are discriminated against here are people of color or non whites. This is especially prevalent in cases of the law. Just this year, similar to what my class just talked about today in class, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed while being arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit bill. A police officer kneeled on his neck for just under 9 minutes which ended up killing Floyd. That is just one evidence towards discrimination in the USA towards people of color, it created unrest and protests to make the country aware. Everyday people are discriminated against and told to "speak English", America is meant to be a melting pot, our country doesn't have it's own language. Our country needs to do better and realize all humans are human no matter what they look like or what their social class is.

In the United States there are definitely people with privilege, and those without. It is clear that the United States was founded on the idea of white supremacy and on the blood of african americans and other minorities. This systemic inequality can still be seen today because schools are still clearly segregated to an extent. Rich neighborhoods are filled with white people, and the schools in those neighborhoods therefore have a white majority. Those students then reap the benefits of their white privilege as they receive a great education and students in poor neighborhoods receive an inadequate education. Then, white students are more equipped to get into college, and can actually afford that further education, which many people of color cannot. In addition to education inequality there is also the mass incarceration of black people in America. Black people are seen as criminals constantly and even become victims of police brutality. Therefore, in America black people and other people of color have always been considered inferior and lack privilege while white people are born with many privileges. I want people of color to be treated with respect and to be given adequate education, housing, and other things. I focused on people of color but in America generally white men are the ones with the most privilege while minorities such as the LGBTQ+ community, women, and so on lack privilege.

The USA was built on the exploitation of POC, and white privilege, so it is safe to say that even with strides to change it, the US is full of inequality. This is not only within racial aspects, as sexual preference, religion, and gender are means for discrimination as well. The most advantaged group is white, straight men, and with that, they also hold the most privilege- the system was built to benefit them. Although virtually everyone under them has some lesser amount of privilege, those who I would think to be most disadvantaged are POC, black people most specifically. Our country was founded on theft, brutality, and racism. With things such as cultural appropriation, wage/income gaps, lack of representation in the media, and racial profiling (along with so much else, I could write a whole essay on just this), it is obvious block people, and POC, in general, are at a huge disadvantage in this country. While on paper, everyone has equal rights, that is not actually the case in everyday life. Black lives, bodes, and freedoms are not upheld and protected even half as much as white ones are. Even aside from POC, LGBTQ+ people, Muslims, Jews, and women are also underprivileged. I believe that we should all be treated with the same level of respect and care and that our country needs serious reform.

In the United States, there are definitely groups of people who are treated less fairly than others, whether thats women, POC, or members of the LGBTQ+ community. For women, it can be unequal pay to their male counterparts or the lack of their right to an abortion . For POC, it's a million different forms of discrimination. Whether its racist remarks, discrimination in the workplace, or police brutality. For the LGBTQ+ community, its a difference in certain rights as well as hate speech and violence against them.
The privileged population in the United States are straight cisgender white men. These men tend to be in higher positions of power even when they aren't qualified, they receive higher pay, they don't face discrimination, they have all of their rights, and are just overall treated much better than any other group of people in the US. I think this group of white men shouldn't be treated any better than anyone else in this country due to the simple fact that their race and gender doesn't automatically make them a better person. Our country has a long way to go in securing equal rights for all groups as well as protecting all groups from hate and violence.

Assuming this is on the topic of race (because of what we’re discussing in class) and not LGBTQ+ I don’t think it’s fair to say that different populations have less rights than others, there are obvious differences in how they are treated but on the topic of rights everyone is objectively equal. Some populations are at a disadvantage however, because of wealth inequality people whose families already have money are at an advantage, (look at something like college admissions) and black families do in general make less money than white families. Generally I like to believe people are treated equally on a day to day basis because I believe 99% of people treat all people the same but the 1 in every 100 are important and set a bad example for the other 99. Also for the question on how I believe people should be treated it's obviously the same but I still believe that almost everyone has the same belief as me.

In the United States, there is a clear disparity between how white people and people of color are treated, the latter being the more disadvantaged population.

One example of this disadvantage is how our law enforcement and criminal justice system disproportionately affect black and brown Americans, leading to higher arrest and incarceration rates for those groups of people. One primary cause of this is over policing in black and brown neighborhoods. This is when more police officers patrol certain areas more often, which makes it more likely that they will catch someone committing a crime. This is not because there are necessarily more criminals in that neighborhood, but rather because more people are watching for crime in those neighborhoods.

The fact that this type of policing is systematically enforced in communities of color but not white communities in our country proves that certain populations are treated less fairly than others, which I don’t think is right. No one chooses what color skin they have, so it isn’t fair that people should be treated differently for something over which they have no control.

In the United States, there are many groups of people who are treated unfairly because of their race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, and sexual orientation. Even though everyone should be guaranteed equal rights, the minorities are often disadvantaged. People of color are more likely to be incarcerated or receive harsher sentences for minor crimes compared with their white counterparts. POC have become victims of police brutality and discrimination. Women are paid less than men working the same job. They are also underrepresented in many industries and abortion has been a controversial topic in America. In addition, immigrants are typically disadvantaged due to their language barriers and racist stereotypes directed towards them. These groups of people are generally underrepresented in the media and have been affected by discrimination and violence. The privileged population in the United States are the white affluent people who have access to good education and opportunities promised by their wealth and protected the color of their skin. In my opinion, everyone should be treated equally. But unfortunately, privileged populations such as the white supremacists don’t want to give up their power for equality.

The United States has a long standing history of racism, a lot of which is still present in our lives. The prison system disproportionally harms black people and other POC's over white people. For example, people of color are more likely to recieve a harsher punishment for a similar crime as compare to a white person. This is shown in the media, where a white man shot two people at a peaceful protest, and was let out on bail with money he got from donations, while a black man was wrongfully put in jail for 44 years until he was let out. The unfair treatment of POC is also shown in the over policing in more black and brown neighborhoods. This also increases the incarceration rate of POC as compared to white people, as they are being watched over more than white people, leading them to be caught for crimes at a higher rate.
Women and LGBTQ+ also treated less fairly than white men. There is an income gap between men and women, which many fail to acknowledge. Also, women don't have many reproductive rights, and those that they do have are at risk of being taken from them. LGBTQ+ have much fewer rights as compared to others. They can be declined heath services, which was a law imposed by Donald Trump, as well as not serve in the military.

In the United States, minority populations and POC are treated less equally than others and in some aspects, we can say that they do have fewer rights than the average white american. African Americans are more likely to be targeted by the police and are always being watched because regardless of what they might be doing, they seem “suspicious”. There had been trends of mass incarceration of African Americans in the history of the United States. Prisons are disproportionately composed of way more black people(specifically black men) than any other race. Immigrants who had just arrived in the United States will have trouble fitting into the land because of the language barrier that exists and the many racist stereotypes that are directed towards them. POC and immigrants lack many opportunities that white people, purely because of their skin color and biases towards them. The privileged and advantaged population in the United States are the white and wealthy people. Their skin color gives them an automatic pass to everything and they have access to better resources and education because of their wealth. I think they should be treated with equality and respect on par with their white peers and everyone needs to recognize the racism in their own actions before we could proceed on and fix the problems and flaws in our system.

No racism in Turkey, Turks are very nice actually against other colors. We never judge them or mistreat them. But our problem is immigrants. The state has a privileged treatment of immigrants in order to get used to our country and normal life. However, some Turks were uncomfortable with this privilege. There are groups that act less fairly and are excluded. These are LGBTQ members and women. They have the same rights legally but are treated differently. Especially LGBTQ members. They were killed and ostracized just because of the life they wanted to live. Also, fanatics do not see men and women as equal, some claim that men are superior. Men with straight cis. (Hello, we are in the 21st century.) In my opinion, everyone should live the way they want. Nobody should be judged by the life they live in.

In the US, there are many populations that have fewer rights than other people do. People of color, members of the lgbtq community, disabled people, and many others are often treated as inferior by society. While a lot of discrimination may not be so obvious as before, it is certainly there, and people in these groups are treated far worse than others. The people who are advantaged in the US are white heterosexual people. This group is often wealthier than other groups because it is easier for white people to find good jobs than it is for people of color. Also, they typically vote for politicians who seek to keep these societal balances in place, rather than create a society that allows everyone to succeed, not just those born into privilege.
Another group that is often treated badly is poor people. Some people view them as lazy or foolish, but the truth is that it is incredibly difficult to escape out of poverty in the United States. I personally think that everyone should be treated fairly, but in order for this wish to be true, we need to spend more time educating people about the various inequalities that plague American society, rather than continuing to allow these unjust systems to survive and hurt so many people simply because of who they are, or what family they were born into.

India’s population is equivalent to 17.7% of the world’s population. In a country where the population exceeds almost a billion, there’s bound to be a part which is underprivileged. The caste system has been practiced in India for a long time, although many efforts are being taken to eradicate it. In the past, certain castes that were considered as minorities were given provisions in many sectors. We call it the “Reservation System” This system guarantees a certain number of seats for the minorities in the working, education and political sectors. This system secures the lives of the economically and socially backward classes. Unfortunately, certain people from lower castes who can afford good education are stealing the opportunities from the less fortunate.

The problem with the reservation system is that it does not give a higher value to the merit of the student but to his/her background, which means that even if a student from a backward class is not fit for a certain field, he/she will secure a seat in some university because he/she belongs to a lower caste. This hampers the progress of the nation. The most affected will be the medical sector: if a student with a low merit decides to become a doctor, we can’t guarantee if they’ll be able to treat the patient because they aren’t equipped to do that, but they will secure the position because a seat was reserved for them in the university. That compromises the medical sector and the lives of those this person will treat.

In my opinion, the idea of the Reservation system is good because it helps the disadvantaged, but it’s being executed in the wrong way. Instead of giving seats based on the person’s background, it should be given based on one’s merit. In this way, the people who are more deserving and more equipped to run the system will be able to do so without any difficulty.

The US has a history of treating people unfairly based on race. White people have generally held the most power and wealth since colonial times. One group that has been especially marginalized throughout history is African Americans. Now, although people are supposed to have the right to equal protection under the law, many black people still face racial inequality in various areas of life: interactions with others, education, applications for jobs and bank loans, voting access, policing, and criminal sentencing are just a few, but they are all intertwined. It is clear that we need to improve the treatment of black Americans, and that a lot needs to be done.

Another specific disadvantaged group is immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants. The immigration process takes an extremely long time, so many people who cannot stay any longer in their home countries (where safety and poverty are often pressing issues) come here illegally, sometimes with young children. Once they get here, they live in constant fear of being sent back, so they are vulnerable to exploitation. I think the process of immigration should be changed so we stop punishing people for trying to improve their lives and becoming part of this country. There is no need to spend resources on deporting someone who has done nothing wrong except live here and contribute to our society.

Besides race and immigration status, discrimination based on religion (Christians are generally in a position of privilege; this is not supposed to be reinforced by the government but it still is), disability, 🤬, and sexual orientation are common. I grouped these together because I think they are less specific to our country.

Why do people judge other based on their sexual orientation or skin colour? That's unnormal.

Social inequality is entrenched into Indian society- namely the caste system- a system of social hierarchy prevailing in Hinduism, the religious majority in the country. Its origins may be dated back to 1500 BC to the ‘Manusmriti’, an authoritative book of Hindu law, but it is argued that caste affiliation was enforced more rigorously under colonial rule.

The caste system dictates every aspect of social life, assigning a specific place to each group under a complex hierarchy fundamental to Indian societal structure. It relegates so-called ‘lower’ castes to menial occupations while the privileged upper classes are considered intellectuals. The system bestowed many privileges on the upper castes while sanctioning repression of the lower castes by privileged groups. Even today, many ‘Dalits’ i.e the so-called ‘untouchables’ face discrimination in spheres of health care, life expectancy, education attainability, access to drinking water and housing.

Most Indians reside in villages, where caste and class affiliations overlap. Large landholders are overwhelmingly upper caste while landless laborers typically belong to the lowest-ranking castes. However, strides have been made in eradicating caste discrimination.

In 1950, the constitution banned discrimination on the basis of caste and quotas were announced for government jobs and educational institutions for scheduled castes and tribes, the lowest in the caste hierarchy, to aid the traditionally disadvantaged.

The spirit of our nation is fueled by unity among all. The injustices of the past certainly have a long way to go before they are amended entirely, but with progressive policies and inclusive schemes and we are on our way to reform our mindset and rid our society of casteism.

I think it's present in different forms, like gender, caste, and such. This ranges from common stereotypes like girls should do household works to chaupadi( girls should stay in a separate untidy cottage during her periods), social hierarchy based on caste system due to so-called upper and lower caste, etc. However, I can say that in present days, the condition is better than before because more aware young generations are working to uproot such culture, by sharing their voices through different platforms. I would say, despite still such prevailing negative social situations, it's moving towards better, safe, collective, inclusive, fair and clean society, in Nepalese Context.

Poverty is one of those salient dilemmas that the population in Lebanon is suffering from. For instance, there is a myriad of people living in poverty, and they are enduring erratic treatment and even discrimination. Additionally, refugees can be a piece of this disadvantaged population who may lack access to stable work conditions, education, and health services. Despite all that, there are privileged populations, for example, rich people who earn fair debt and great treatment due to their state. Also, those people who have an adequate state at politics are getting whatever they want in their country. Overall, these deprived populations are unfortunate to be found in a place where they can't carry their rights. Hence, the government and all of us should work freely with different organizations to support them and formulate all their rights.

In Lebanon, there are people on both ends of the spectrum. We have rich people who are able to have a stable life without many losses during the current economic crisis, and at the same time, we have homeless people who are at a great disadvantage and cannot find any food to eat. To begin with, the homeless people in Lebanon are usually treated with a lot of hatred and prejudice and cannot survive through some winters due to the lack of resources and empathy within the community as no one is willing to give up a blanket for them. Furthermore, people of color face a lot of racism and discrimination within the community, and domestic works are lied to and placed at the risk of sexual, physical, and verbal abuse along with other financial risks. I believe that the source of this discrimination, whether it be a government or culture, should be rebuilt and/or dismantled because we all bleed the same in the end.

Yes, there are populations that are treated less equally than others in the US. There are also populations that are more privileged than others. The difference between how these populations are treated can be seen in many things such as systemic racism or institutional racism, unfair treatment by the police, mass incarceration, and many more. People of color and immigrants in the United States are treated unfairly in the law and show disparities between how those populations are treated in contrast to the white population. The LGBTQ+ community also has to fight for basic rights. White people in the US have privilege, whether that be involving voting, being less affected by the police system, or many other things. I believe that everyone should be treated equally, but the focus must be directed at those who are currently, and have been, experiencing discrimination in their lives.

There are many groups in the United States that experience rampant discrimination, among them Native Americans, Black people, Asian-Americans and Latinos - essentially everyone who does not have white European ancestry. Many of these groups have faced such harsh racism in the past that their descendants directly suffer not only from present-day racism, but from other issues such as abject poverty. In particular, Black Americans are often targeted by law enforcement and receive far harsher punishments for the same crimes as white Americans. Further, since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been an increase in hate crimes against people of Asian descent as racists target innocent people. The United States was founded on equality for all, but is still far from living up to that promise due to the racist sentiments held by many, and a lack of effort to dismantle racist systems.

I believe there is almost no discrimination based on race or physical features in my country, however many are treated more/less fairly based on the status of their family. I believe its roots lay deep in the foundation of the kazakh mentality to help bretheren and put them first, rather than working with a person not within their ancestorial line. Even from the nomad days, kazakhs would differentiate themselves by their clan and favour their clanmates when working on a goal. Today, this is reflected in how people are employed, their career path and their possible future. However, instead of differentiating by clan, today, it's distinguished on a smaller scale by families. Nonetheless, this sort of familial discrimination shapes the future of those small groups of people, either giving them more privilege in life, or less.

Many different groups are not respected or given fewer rights than others in the United States. White, American, Catholic males are at the top of America's social caste, and there are many different routes you could go down to see who has fewer rights. If you think of gender, women are given less rights, and LGBTQ are given even less. If you think of religion, Muslims are at the bottom, as Americans have this constant fear of them. If you think of race, Asians and Asian Americans are given fewer rights, Hispanics less and Blacks and African Americans are given the least amount of rights.
