  • Urquhart and Weir (1998) thought since reading is a skill, it can also be broken down into smaller components.
  • Mundy (1978) said reading could be thought of as 19 individual skills to be taught. 
  • One Second of Reading model by Gough (1972) states that reading is a sequential process starting with speech sounds and ending with understanding of the author's message. 
  • LeBerge and Samuels(1974)  came up with the Theory of Automatic Information Processing , describing the concept called automacity, which is the focus of the Sub-skils Theory.

  • Reading is a set of sub-skills that children must master with automaticy.  These sub-skills must be taught while while reading. 
  • Sub-sets are smaller skills that when mastered can be used to learn larger skills.  View Figure 1 to understand the bottom-up model.
  • The overall goal of this subskill theory is comprehension.  Meaning is found within the text and reading is considered a passive activity.
