In chapter 14 of "Born a Crime", Tim, Trevor's friend, recognizes that Trevor needs a date, so he offers one to him. He then meets Babiki and falls in love with her. They go out on a few dates, until Trevor asks her to go to the dance with him for his Senior year. He asked Abel to borrow his BMW to impress Babiki, but in the end Abel broke the promise and that night Babiki almost refused to get in the car. But, once they got to the dance, she again refused to get out.

This is where Trevor learns that Babiki did not speak English. He took her back home and spent the night, ashamed that he was so caught up on looks, he didn't get to know her.

Identity, belonging, and Heartbreak are some main themes in this chapter.

Identity is a clear theme in this chapter, when Trevor gets to meet a girl named Babiki. She doesn't speak as much, and Trevor didn't notice this, just be being so inlove with her. Later on, he comes to realize that Babiki doesn't speak English due to her identity. He was so caught up on his blinded love to come to terms to hear Babiki's voice.
Showing this, Trevor feels upset that he didn't understand this in the start. It left him into a heartbreak.

In this chapter of "Born a Crime", you can see the lessons we learn from this 'tragedy' (or embarrassment in this case), was we need to learn more about people and get to know them even if love or affection for this person starts to blind you. This affects me as a reader and who I am because it may relate to something I've perhaps done before or something that happened that's similar. It helps us to understand more of Trevor's love life and how that it always doesn't go to plan.
