Teachers have to look past bias and assumptions and be willing to do a self inventory of their skills and abilities when teaching diverse backgrounds. This may include learning important days, or historical figures.

Creating a space that is accessible and adaptive creates opportunities for success for this student population. Big takeaways for me include making space for students that may have adaptive equipment. This also includes placing materials on accessible shelves, improving classroom sound, or lighting and visuals.

The district I work in is incorporating open and transparent ways to doing business. In the face of our budget crisis our district has hosted roundtable discussions to get community input as to how budget dollars are spent and allocated. This method was selected by our board of education to be inclusive of our diverse community and to allow for awareness of student, teacher, and administrative needs within a school district. It allows them to peel back the curtain and makes the community aware of the process.

As educators we want to create more choice when it comes to post graduate pathways outside of college. This may include a vocation that involves, construction, hospitality, or technology. This conference also made sure that we recruit and target potential educators and other school support for employment opportunities that are male or of black and brown decent. Also addressed during this conference were student needs for SEL learning and best practices for multilanguage learners.
