1. The political divide between the American muslim public are whether if the extremism of the Islam religion is something to be concerned about. Majority of the American Muslims feel that there is a growing concern about the extremism of the religion where a small portion is not.
2. A major issue is the misunderstanding of the muslim religion because there are many prejudice perspectives due little knowledge of the general public. There is only a small portion of muslims practicing extreme Islam and that is what is being exposed by the media.
3. A misconception that is seen in America is that muslims are the general people responsible for bombings. Islam is a religion not a race. So any race is capable creating chaos, but they associate Islam as the race and the ideals that people follow.

Dept. of Ed. projects public schools will be ‘majority-minority’ this fall

2014 was the first year where the composite number of minority students outnumbered white students in public schools (private schools remained majority white with a 73%). The majority of this increase was caused by hispanic and asian enrollment while black enrollment remained steady. The increase in minority enrollment was not caused by immigration but rather a population growth of US-born hispanic and asian children, with elementary students making up the majority of the shift. Also in 2014 the dropout rate of hispanic high school students fell to 12% from 32% in 2000 but still remains higher than the second highest dropout rate of black students at 7%. Only 15% of hispanic young adults (25-29 years old) have bachelor degrees due to 48% attending 2-year schools or community college. In 2016, 83% of hispanic voters cited education as very important to their vote. Overall the consensus seems to be that the barrier to hispanic pursuit of higher education is mostly due to economical means.

Secondary Link: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/07/28/5-facts-about-latinos-and-education/

https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/04/22/bay-area-paradox-we-need-housing-but-we-dont-want-to-build/-the state is majority Democratic and therefore has no government strife. The divide is between the people in the state and as well as the developing population and market. 2. The housing here is too expensive and some are forced to move out or rent a RV. It is due to the current market and competitive companies trying to make their net worth increases. 3. An assumption is that larger companies are trying to help families who are being driven out of their neighborhood, but they have their own issues and trying to hold onto their employees.

1) There is not much of a political divide since our topic is specific to Bay Area in California, and generally, people in California are Democratic.2) Housing is way too expensive and unrealistic for most people that it is now common for people to not live on their own for the beginning of their adulthood since they are unable to afford housing.3) Large companies are trying to help the families who are being driven out of their neighborhoods, but really they are trying to solve the issue.

Those adults with a college degree are much less likely to say religion is very important in their lives, or that they believe in God with a surety than those adults with less college education, or who have had none. However, 3/4 of college graduates are affiliated with a religion, which is similar across the board, for those with only some college, or with only a high school education. This article's main point was that while overall more education meant less religion, many college graduates were still religious and active.

The data above is representing whether Muslim people believe that killing for political, social, or religious reasons is justifiable. First off, the survey consisted of seven different independent variables being the people who were selected. There are men and women, age groups, elementary through college graduated, U.S or foreign born, political parties, religion, and the general public. Hence, in order to sum up the main and more important data from the chart, I am going to average the percentage for killing is often justified and the percentage of killing never justifiable. According to my calculations, altogether only 11.87% of all the Muslim people interviewed believe that killing for social, political or religious reasons is justifiable. On the other side of the spectrum, 84% of all the Muslim people believe that killing for social, political, or religious is not justifiable. Moreover, what the data chart is trying to depict is that majority of Muslims are not violent nor have thoughts of committing terrorism no matter their background. This helps contradict the misconception that all terrorism that occurs in the United States has to do with the Muslim people or their religious background with Islam. Muslims are no threat to society and the threat of society in America is the stereotypes which cause the chaos.

Around nine-in ten blacks adults(87%) said blacks are generally treated less fairly than whites on te criminal justice system The views of the criminal justice system vary based on race due to minorities being discriminates and treated less poorly than whites. iN addition in a 2018 survey only around a third of blacks (36%) support capital punishment for this crime, compared with nearly six-in-ten whites (59%) in the death penalty. Even thought we see many unfair accusations we see how the death penalty is lower on blacks than whites.

link:
https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/05/21/from-police-to-parole-black-and-white-americans-differ-widely-in-their-views-of-criminal-justice-system/

A court ruling from February 2018 ruled against the formation of a new school district due to the belief that the proposed district would take advantage of lax districting laws to gerrymander a mostly white, mostly wealthy school system. A number of southern counties have broken away to form school systems that do not reflect the overall census of the area (eq a Memphis district with a poverty rate of 11% and Caucasian attendance of 50% compared to the county wide 31% and 7% repsective averages). While supports argue seceding is a matter of control, critics fear wealthy districts are creating gated communities to hoard tax dollars, leaving fewer resources for poorer and less white school systems thus violating the right to equal education.

The negative effects of climate change are limiting people's rights. Climate change causes an increase of extreme weather events, natural disasters, rising sea levels, floods, heat waves, droughts, desertification, water shortages, and the spread of tropical and vector-borne diseases. They impact people because they limit what the person can do. Several of these rights include: the rights to life, water and sanitation, food, health, housing, self-determination, culture and development.

Nearly 1 in 5 public school teachers have taken up second jobs in part because since 1996 inflation adjusted pay for such teachers has fallen by 1.7%. Through 2018 and 2019 tens of thousands of teachers have joined massive strikes calling for increased pay and respect. One teacher attributes the rise in expectations for teachers, without consideration for their pay and circumstances, to a 1983 Reagan Administration report blaming lower American test scores to bad teachers. Conditions have lead to a national teacher exodus and subsequent shortage because those who love to teach have been forced to give up the job in order to survive.

According to the article, gun control after the El Paso and Dayton shootings caused, obviously, more people to support on regulating gun ownership. But according to the news back then and now, there is a ebb and flow where attention on gun control increases rapidly and then falls back then when the story of the particular shooting loses its value in the news cycle. Over the years since the Sandy Hook Shooting, more people are taking initiative in enacting stricter gun laws. It seems like the more incidents that happen, the more likely the public opinion would sway to more gun control.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-views-on-gun-control-have-changed-in-the-last-30-years/

This article talks about how while the inflation adjusted pay for teachers has gone down, the demand for their time has gone up. Under this mounting pressure, many teachers are forced to either get a second job, or to leave the profession altogether. In addition, the walkouts teachers have taken in attempts to get more funding and better pay have typically fallen very short of their desires. While the community supports them during the walkout, when given an opportunity to vote for more taxes to help support teachers funding more, people often vote no.

This is directly related to the healthcare industry as so many people, mainly men, are reporting illness to the CDC due to THC poisoning from vaping. The main issue used to be cigarettes, just as doctors were beginning to understand all the effects and different aspects of the danger, vaping explodes. This has greatly changed the focus in the medical industry as well as the change in drug usage especially in teenagers. A main problem right now is the withholding of information and tests that many companies are doing, so that doctors are not being able to know the full affect and damage that vaping is doing on humans.

The surprising aspect of gun policy within the U.S. is not so much about how perspectives have changed, but how they have actually stayed the same. This interview explains how many people view the 2nd Amendment as an absolute entity that cannot be restricted. This is similar to how most Americans view the 1st Amendment and thus apply the same logic to any policies that try to restrict the rights promised by the 2nd Amendment. This poses an interesting conflict between the idea of how important the 2nd Amendment holds true in our changing society.

Michigan students and their families are facing increasingly unaffordable secondary education, especially in the cases of colored and adult students. State funding (4.1% compared to the average 10.1% of state budget) for schools has fallen along with financial aid while tuition prices have risen. In Michigan 66% of black families and 57% of Hispanic families cannot afford the basic costs of living, let alone tuition, and enrollment in college of those demographics would have to double to meet state demographics. Wages in jobs that don't require secondary education have fallen and with the abolishment of the Adult Part-Time grant, there is virtually no financial aid for adults over 28.

Although the fires have decreased due to national and international pushes. One reason the Amazon is burning is because of illegal lodging. 90% of the timber removed was removed illegally. Loggers would take valuable wood from the forest and burn everything else down. The cleared land is then used for agricultural and industrial purposes.

After the attack on El Paso, Texas, the government used the term "domestic terrorism" for the first time to refer to the white supremacist violence that has been occurring throughout the country. Until World War II, power in American society was almost exclusively that of Anglo-Saxon whites. That changed a little after the conflict, but they were always threatened by everything that was different. This sentiment strengthened after 9/11, as the attacks were accomplished by Arab and Muslim men. There was a reaction to immigrants in general. Fear of foreigners grew.

In a case involving a wealthy man, Jeffrey Epstein, he took advantage of several underage girls and sexually assaulted them. He used his position of power to help him in finding loopholes in the system, and most likely used bribes to sway the prosecution and aid in his defense. He succeeded in postponing his trial and only was put in county jail for a short amount of time. The chief, Michael Reiter, was incredibly frustrated by the decision, and tried to do whatever he could to properly convict Epstein with no success. He blames the justice system for having these loopholes, and wants stricter legislation on the sexual abuse of minors. Epstein was recently convicted of similar charges and committed suicide in his jail cell, sparking the conversation once again.

In a speech to republican activist, current US Education Secretary Betsy Devos derided how much influence the federal government has on education. She argues that the 1 trillion dollars invested in education over the past 40 years is ineffective and costs taxpayers too much. Instead of introducing more money and regulations or tuition-free college, Devos stresses the importance of school choice and financial literacy. Devos argues that federal involvement in education has lead to a bloated bureaucracy that hurts students and only serves the interests of teacher unions and other adults.

Both the federal government and the state government have powers to reduce the effects of climate change. An example of this happening is when congress passed the Clean Air Act, which has become the main law to stop climate change. The Environmental Protection Agency can give states flexibility for if they want to follow this or not. One benefit is that if the federal government doesn't want to create a law based on climate change, the states can and will implement it. However, federal laws are much more effective than the state laws.

Devos issued a proposal that would roll back Obama-era guidelines on how schools deal with sexual assault cases. Under the old laws universities had to investigate all complaints of sexual assault even if they occurred off campus or they risked being investigated by the federal government and having their funding revoked. The new guidelines would allow schools to investigate fewer cases and have the accused cross-evaluate the accuser's evidence by use of a proxy. Supporters claim this will make judgement of assault cases more fair while those opposing the proposal worry cases will be swept under the rug.

However, in Australia, the police officers can arrest a person and not charge the person for up to two weeks. Moreover, the article is mainly focusing on the fact that Australia is trying to toughen their laws on terrorism. Also, the article has no political controversy which is different to a U.S source.

There are many reasons for inefficiency of Courts in Pakistan’s Criminal Justice System. First of

all the case is being destroyed by the Police Investigator at investigation stage which means it

always lacks the required level of evidence which is necessary for the conviction. In Pakistan, Lawyer Bar Councils are very powerful and influential bodies who virtually dictate their terms on courts and if lawyer want to prolong a case for months or even years, judge cannot stop him. This is also the main cause of delay in decision of cases. There is also rampant corruption in

judiciary and a wealthy person can easily get clean chit from the courts with different tactics. Due to increasing perks and privileges in judiciary the levels of corruption are decreased in last

one decade but there is still lot of room for improvement.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/325287194_Criminal_Justice_System_in_Pakistan

The justice system is forcing him to do so, stating he is not above the law or exempt from it, demonstrating rule of law. Others argue that it would be unconstitutional to try the president in the justice system as a criminal. The article also says that since Gerald Ford, Trump is the only president not to publish the tax returns annually, since most do so to be transparent with the people. The findings may cause some controversy. El Espanol is a Spanish newspaper, so it takes a European perspective to this event. Spain is a constitutional/parliamentary monarchy.

Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren proposed a plan to overhaul American education systems last Tuesday. Her proposed bills included increasing funding for schools in high poverty areas, invest more funding into the Americans with Disabilities Education Act, crack down on charter schools, raise teacher pay, eliminate use of standardized testing in decisions regarding shutting down schools, student debt forgiveness, and a variety of other programs. Funding these programs would require another series of programs implementing 2% taxes on millionaire and 3% taxes on billionaires. The likelihood of all of these bills passing, or even a couple of them to be frank, is questionable given our legislative system.

There is a lot of controversy because in the States courtroom, they cannot legally charge someone with terrorism, only the federal government can.

2. I agree with the bill that Mcsally is going to pass because people who have killed multiple civilians need to see the full spectrum of their crime. Their needs to be more laws like these so that then terrorist can think twice about their actions and know that they are going to get sentenced to the maximum punishment.

Proposed legislative actions surrounding increasing funding for schools (especially in high poverty areas), cracking down on charter schools, and taxes on millionaires and billionaires to fund these bills are what define Warren's push for presidency. The house is also investigating Betsy Devos for allowing a few shut-down colleges to keep teaching without informing students they are no longer accredited.

2. We don't think Warren's proposals will get anywhere in the divided congress especially given how interdependent they all are. This legislative action is good because for years tech companies have been dishonest with their users about how their data is being used, saying
that certain products are free when the user is actually paying for it using their data, which is supplied to them through the user's money. However, for example Michigan made and Executive Order to ban online sellers and California has developed recommendations to reduce the availability of vaping devices to persons under 21 years of age. I think these are great legislative actions but I think they should do more because the problem still exists and is still very bad, causing severe and dangerous lung diseases.

This article talks about the whistleblower and the process of Trump’s impeachment inquiry. Trump wants to find out the identity of this whistleblower, but the article argues that there must be protections to maintain them anonymous, and that it is dangerous to expose them. It’s sort of rule of law, where even though it is the president, he does not have special permissions to go around the law. To keep things fair in the legal and the criminal justice system, he has to be treated as any criminal, or the case might disappear, leaving the wrongs unaddressed. There are legislative actions to keep the whistleblower's identity secret, even though Trump wants to find them. I think it's good that they don't try to expose the identity, and that Trump should be treated the same in the criminal justice system. On a federal level, legislation should maintain the rights and safety of witnesses.

The Education Department took some action to help them, backdating a change in status to allow the schools to continue drawing aid. The House committee is investigating to understand what action the Department took, whether it was legal or not, and whether they had the right to take the action they took. The Department has been uncooperative, and now the house is threating subpeona to get the full understanding.

1. This article is about President Donald Trump’s healthcare agenda that puts seniors and American patients first. The article mostly summarizes all the actions the president (executive branch) has been doing lately. Some examples are that last year, President Trump released a historic blueprint to drive down drug prices and Medicare Advantage premiums will drop next year to their lowest level since 2007, a 28 percent decrease since 2017 and The Trump Administration laid the foundation to start importing certain prescription 🤬 that are cheaper in other countries.
2. I think it is great that the president is trying to make health care cheaper and available for everyone.
3. The legislative branch was mostly about passing bills with restriction and similar while the executive branch seems to work more with programs and budgeting and making improvements rather than complete changes like new laws.

Following up on Emily's report from last week, Secretary of Education DeVos has been officially held in civil contempt and fined $100,000 for collecting on student loans from the individuals who were defrauded by Corinthian Colleges. These lawsuits were filed the same day Democrats threatened DeVos with a subpoena, which is an investigation still ongoing with plans for hearings in November. Devos is being held in contempt for failing to comply with a preliminary injunction to stop collecting loans from Corinthian College students.

1. This matter is less of a question of executive action so much as what's happening to an executive office, though the executive education board is working to reimburse victims of Corinthian College.
2. I think the education board is doing too little too late. They need to overhaul their system and figure out how Corinthian Colleges slipped through the cracks to begin with.
3. I was following up on the same issue that Emily brought up last week, though in that case it was about the House trying to subpoena DeVos rather than about what the education board is facing and what they're trying to do about it. This is kind of the main scandal going down in terms of education, beyond democrat president hopefuls lauding ideas about free college and the like.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/education/2019/10/24/betsy-devos-contempt-violating-order-student-loans/4091621002/

He has created appeals and other reforms that make some people unhappy and others happy. He has been working on health care issues and ideas since October 2017
1.

Summary: President Trump is being forced to make a decision regarding gun policy. A new bill has been introduced and approved in the House of Reps. This newly introduced bill requires all possible gun owners to undergo more intense background checks than previously established. The bill has not yet passed the Senate but has instead fallen to two filibusters (2013 and 2015). Thus, President Trump must soon decide on whether to support the new bill. However, supporting this bill will cause major strife with the NRA.

Padlet Questions:
1. The Executive Branch, meaning the President is currently having to decide on whether to support a bill involving gun policy.
2. I believe this is a lot of pressure to put on the president seeing as the House has already approved the bill and the majority of the Senate has verbally claimed to follow the president's lead. However, if the president decides to support such bill then he breaks almost all ties with the NRA. I would like the Executive Branch to base their decision on what they believe is best for the people, regardless of political motivations or consequences.
3. While the actions of the Executive Branch are not as extensive as the Legislature, decisions are made much quicker and are mainly dependent on the decisions of a single governing party/person. Instead of having two large groups of people debate issues that ultimately affect the entire country, all of the pressure falls on one person instead, the President.

1. Currently, the Executive Branch is taking action to expel anti-conservative biases within big tech companies such as Google, Facebook and Twitter.
2. I believe that these Executive actions are somewhat justified. It is stated that people have been banned from certain sites for their views, and people have been fired based on their conservative beliefs as well. However, I believe that a way to solve this problem would be to not share your political beliefs in the workplace - this would solve the issue of being fired for your political viewpoints.
3. These actions are similar to the Legislative actions being taken. The Legislative action I discovered was regarding how tech companies are being dishonest with their users about how their data is being used, and the Legislative branch is working to pass a bill to reform this system. This is similar to how the executive branch is trying to eliminate dishonest behavior within big tech companies.

1. Trump is taking steps to expand and enhance the ability of the United States to sanction terrorists and those who finance them worldwide.
2. I think this executive order is pretty good because it deprives terrorist groups of financial, material, and logistical support. In that way, it is harder to they act. I think the Executive branch should guarantee that
3. Even though Trump is known for being extremist, I think this executive order is more fair in a way because the article about the legislature I've chosen, the law is a little bit dangerous since they could accuse someone for being a terrorist without a probable cause or evidences.

Currently, there is a high prison population and mass incarceration is something all Democratic candidates are looking to reform. I think that there definitely be some change in the system, and more efforts put into rehabilitation. At the state level, I would like more opportunities offered for those released from prison. These actions differ to the actions of legislature in that they are surrounding a different topic, since I looked at impeachment inquiry and the system last week.

One of the parts of the criminal justice system is the courts. The court has the authority to make decisions based on law.Criminal cases are heard by trial courts with general jurisdictions. Usually, a judge and jury are both present. It is the jury’s responsibility to determine guilt and the judge’s responsibility to determine the penalty, though in some states the jury may also decide the penalty. Unless a defendant is found “not guilty,” any member of the prosecution or defense (whichever is the losing side) can appeal the case to a higher court. In some states, the case then goes to a special appellate court; in others it goes to the highest state court, often known as the state supreme court.
https://courses.lumenlearning.com/alamo-sociology/chapter/reading-the-criminal-justice-system/

The article is about the Supreme Court that will hear a health care case in December, but its decision on risk corridors (Risk Corridors are a mechanism to minimize the year-end losses of insurers who covered a disproportionate share of sicker, often older, insured customers) won’t affect the ACA. So the Supreme Court agreed to hear the Moda Health Plan, Inc. v U.S., a case about the Affordable Care Act’s risk corridors program. "Dozens of insurance companies are arguing that they are owed $12 billion in risk corridor payments associated with their participation in the early years of Obamacare. The Court will hear arguments in the case on December 10 and likely make a decision this spring. The Court’s decision will have a one-time effect on the bottom line of many insurers. But how the Court resolves this backward-looking dispute about a now-expired program will not meaningfully change how the Affordable Care Act or health insurance markets operate in the future."
2. I think it is important to support the insurance companies to make sure that as many people as possible can have insurance so that they can afford health care. Therefore I think it is good that the judicial branch is taking this seriously and chose to take on the case.
3. The Executive and Legislative branch focus more on what can change, like new laws and improvements with programs etc, while the judicial branch makes sure that these laws and programs are followed.

This will incredibly detrimental to students not only because of the instability the loss of a teacher causes but because of the void that would be left in teaching english language learners especially.
3. DACA was originally an executive order set in the Obama administration and every other law that's attempting to fix the immigration crisis is stymied in congress. There's no really current alternative to DACA, which was supposed to be a temporary fix anyway, and getting rid of it would have disastrous consequences.

The actions that they are taking are very very slow, they are gathering data and getting multiple opinions on whether or not the Affordable Care Act should be ended or strengthened.
2. The actions they are taking are good, but they are slow. Although their ultimate goal is good, the process is taking a long time and no actions are really being taken. The groups that are trying to influence these actions are mainly President Trump as well as other groups/ organizations of people advocating for equal healthcare.
3. The actions of executive and legislative directly correlate, as all of them have different opinions and actions that they want to make based on the issue. Since the ACA was from a past president there are many past laws and precedents that need to be considered in order to make the best situation for all the people in America.

The Legislature of New York City is trying to get the case out of the Supreme Court as soon as possible.

1. Currently, the Supreme Court is preparing to hear a case about Google stealing 11,500 lines of code from Oracle programs and deploying it to android users. Google is being accused of copyright and can face billions of dollars in fines.
2. I believe that the court deciding to review this case is a good decision, but the influence they are under is detrimental to their actions. For example, the court is being urged by other big tech companies to make a decision favoring Google while the Trump administration wants the court to side with Oracle. This can negatively impact the ability of the Court Judges to remain unbiased in their decision.
3. The executive branch will enforce the decision made within the judicial branch, and the legislative branch will reevaluate the laws written in the Constitution if the judicial decision requires it to be altered in some way.
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/15/supreme-court-will-hear-copyright-suit-between-google-and-oracle.html
