In first language acquisition it is said that there is a "lag" in production and comprehension.

The book illustrates this with the child-adult exchange:
Three year old Lisa: My name is Litha
Adult: Litha?
Lisa: No, Litha
Adult: Oh, Lisa
Lisa: Yeah, Litha

Lisa perceived and comprehended the difference in Lisa and Litha, but she was not producing the difference in sounds.

Children generally understand "more" than they can actually produce.

When children are 12 months old, they typically start saying their first words. Once they have a vocabulary of about 50 words, they will start using two word phrases. At that point, they may not be using very many words, but they can likely answer "yes or no" questions to sentences longer than a two word phrase. This would lead one to believe that they understand more than just two word phrases, supporting the notion of understanding more than what is produced.
