In "Self Reliance" Emerson's purpose is to persuades you to think more for yourself not to be like anybody else because you're perfect the way you are. He states this by saying "That envy is ignorance, imitation is suicide and that you must take yourself for better or for worse." He wants you to be your own person, not envy others and what they have or try to be like anybody else You. Are. Perfect the way you are!

The purpose of Emerson's essay "Self Reliance" is to show that people need to accept themselves as who they are and not try to fit a mold that isn't them. In it he says "...envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion..." This is saying that you shouldn't be envious of those around you, you shouldn't try to be exactly like those around you, and you should accept yourself as who you are and embrace the person you are. Through this example it is evident that one of the main purposes of this essay is to show people that they don't need to change to fit the social mold.

The purpose which Emerson conveys to the readers throughout his essay "Self Reliance", is that words mean nothing until ones acts to make the statements become real. Not only should actions be shown, but they should also be delivered through oneself. Strive to be yourself, and nothing more than yourself. Being individually unique, creates a better meaning within your life. If one were to live in someone else's shoes, then your life already has a trend set for itself. Good things come from being different.

The purpose of Ralph Waldo Emerson's work "Self Reliance" is to persuade the reader of their own importance within themselves. He states "envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse". In this he is saying people must live their own lives and anything else will only lead to misery. No one knows the silent struggles of people around them but everyone can know what they need themselves. Emerson was trying to help people see their own identities within themselves and without the help of others.
