Jane makes it clear that she could not marry Rochester if their marriage was not equal. She is expected to conform to the standard that the only way a woman to can be rich, is to marry rich. 
In Jane Eyre, Jane realizes that men try to hide the monstrous, (monster and angel used as symbolism in the book,)monstrous as in improper, selfish and any traits that make men feel inferior. And try to only show the angelic side; proper, dainty, sweet, and pure.
