Brom starts off as a humble story teller “,the old storyteller Brom stepped forward. A knotted white beard rippled over his chest, and a long black capes was wrapped around his bent shoulders, obscuring his body. He spread his arms with his hands that reached out like talons and recited thus:” (Paolini 31). Brom will go a long way from this position and seems like he is a simple exposition based character.

Much of the book is spent with Brom teaching Eragon. He is an old mentor and his character's development takes form in his tutoring of Eragon. It takes place this way because of Eragon's curious nature as a character. For example when Eragon discovered his magic ability he questioned Brom ," 'Do you have a mark of your own?' 'No. Only Riders have them,' said Brom," This seems like we learn a specific peace of information but in reality this is Brom lying to Eragon. There are many secrets he hides from him which shows he believes that he knows what's good for other people.

Brom is a very wise experienced man. He was a rider back in his young days and that blesses him with a vast knowledge of magic and sword training. He vowed to protect Eragon and his presence in Carvahall wasn't a coincidence. He was well known across Alagaesia because of his status as a rider who helped a small triumph over Morzan and Galbatorix.

BROM's death affect on Eragon in the plot

Brom's death came at a time where Eragon's pursuit of revenge seemed to be coming to an end. But then on the run from the Ra'zac and attempting to find the rebels, Eragon seeks companionship with Murtagh. His loss of Brom set him up to create a connection with Murtagh which comes in handy later in the book. Brom strengthens Eragon's confidence through things he allows Saphira to tell after his death, "Brom also wanted you to know that of all people in Alagaesia, he believed you were the best suited to inherit the Riders' legacy (Paolini 282)".

Ancestry shapes Brom's character through his understanding of it. A lot of the book is spent with him sharing these secrets and history to better Eragon and supplements his wise mentor character.

Brom is an influential character to this text and can be influential through the thousands of books and movies sold. He shows how a teacher can change in the view of a student and just because you don't fully disclose yourself to someone doesn't mean you aren't appreciated or loved.

I believe the theme of Eragon, is that you have choice in your personal identity. Eragon struggles with choosing to fulfill his life as a rider and living the life he grew attached to. This theme is supplemented by characters like Saphira and Brom who pose these difficult questions on Eragon. I believe a secondary theme of the significance of a tutor is present throughout the rising action of the book when Brom is alive. He represents a role model and voice of calm wisdom to Eragon in troubling times.

This supports both themes. Supporting the first one as being a decision posed to Eragon on what he will do and the second one because it was a quality line of wisdom that Eragon needs to consider.
