Pastel

Pastel is essentially a chalk medium with colored pigment and a non-greasy binder added to it. There are three labels for these pastel colors which is soft medium and hard. The more binder the harder the stick, but the harder the stick the less intense the color. This is why people tend to associate the word "pastel" with pale light colors. An example of using medium pastel stick is Edgar Degas, after the bath and she used this because he wanted to improvise a loose sketch like drawing.

A common technique in the late 15th century and early 16th century was metal point which is a stylus made of gold, silver, or some other metal which is then applied to a sheet of paper mixed with a mixture of powdered bones and gum water, in some cases pigments other than white are added in this preparation to color the paper. When the metal point stylus is applied to its ground, a chemical reaction results, and line is produced when then creates the drawing. In order to create a thicker line, you use a thicker stylus.

Graphite, a soft form of carbon similar to coal, was discovered in 1564 in Borrowdale, England. As good black chalk became more and more difficult to obtain, the lead pencil-graphite enclosed in a cylinder of soft wood-increasingly became one of the most common drawing tools. It became even more popular during the Napoleonic Wars early in the nineteenth century.

Oilsticks are oil paint manufactured with enough wax for the paint to be molded into stick form. They allow the painter to draw directly onto a surface without brushes, palettes, paint tubes, or solvents. Although related to pastel sticks, which are too soft to permit long and continuous strokes across the surface, the density of oilsticks allow the artist more gestural freedom and a sense of direct engagement with the act of drawing itself

As paper became more and more widely available, most drawings were made with iron-gall ink, which was made from a mixture of iron salts and an acid obtained from the nutgall, a swelling on an oak tree caused by diseases. Ink would allow them to do art faster and express themselves more.

When ink is diluted with water and applied by brush in broad, flat areas, the result is called a wash. Helps them define and put more shadow and volume on the basic "drawing" made by pen and ink, graphite.
