LOUD SOUNDS OR QUIET SPACES

When it's time to center my focus on the assignment to write. The first thing I do is check my mood/energy, which plays a big role in my writing to write. It's a self-assessment to evaluate myself. However, I can write in loud or quiet spaces to be within. I can go at a fast or slow pace; my mind can adapt to any environment.

At my desk, while playing some Oprah, Classical or Instrumental music!

I do my best writing when I am sitting at my desk, while playing some Oprah, Classical or Instrumental music, where I can focus without distractions. Being organized and having my materials in front of me helps me think clearly and put my ideas into words. Allowing me to be calm, reflective, and able to concentrate on my thoughts without interruptions. I notice that I do my strongest work when I take my time to plan, think through my ideas, and revise as I go.

For this class, I can apply what I’ve learned about myself by making sure I dedicate time at my desk to focus on readings and assignments. I can create a routine that allows me to write thoughtfully rather than rushing at the last minute. By using this approach, I can improve the quality of my discussion board posts, essays, and reflections, and meet my goals for the class with clearer, more organized, and more insightful writing.

I’m a big procrastinator so my bed is more convenient and conventional for doing my work. Might randomly remember I have an assignment to do and switch over to the Pulse app. 8/10 I’m probably already on my iPad just doing something a lot less productive. Have music playing in the background unless I’m overstimulated or can’t focus.

I think I do my best writing when I'm alone in a quiet space. If I am with others or there is too much sound around me, I tend to lose focus, and my train of thought easily disappears. I sort of get writer's clock (I think that's what it's called lol). When I write really well, I'm usually locked in the room with just the light on or in the living room when everyone's asleep, and I know I won't be needed for anything for the rest of the night.

Gosh i really wishes I was able to concetrate with noises, but nope thats now how it works. Even when I am day dreaming I get mad at myself because I loose focus and I try a few things to help me get back in the game and start writing or doing my home work. Coffee is my #1 one, then I clean my house or my space area so I wot have to look at the mess snd start thinking about ways to clean or where to place things around. Lastly I stare at my computer and tell myself I got this, lets finish this so I can have a free evening.

My Writing Practices and Processes

Where and how do I do my best writing?

I've discovered that my best writing rarely happens in a single, intense session. Instead, it's a two-stage process that depends heavily on my environment.

1. The Ideation & Drafting Phase: My most creative and fluid writing happens when I'm away from my desk. I do my best initial drafting and idea-generation in a moderately busy but comfortable public space, like a coffee shop or a library commons area. The gentle background hum of activity acts as a kind of "white noise" that helps me focus, preventing the distractions that often creep in when I'm in a completely silent room. At this stage, I almost always write by hand in a notebook or use a distraction-free writing app on my laptop. The goal is to get ideas flowing without the internal pressure of perfect grammar or formatting.

2. The Refining & Editing Phase: Once I have a rough draft, my needs change. For the detailed work of revising, structuring arguments, and polishing sentences, I need quiet and solitude. This phase happens at my desk at home. Here, I can spread out my notes, have multiple browser tabs open for research, and focus deeply on the technical aspects of writing without external interruptions.

What am I doing when I write really well?

When I'm writing effectively, I am almost always following a ritual. I start with a clear, small goal (e.g., "write the introduction" or "outline two main points"). I use techniques like the Pomodoro method, writing in focused 25-minute bursts followed by a 5-minute break to stay fresh. Crucially, during these focused sessions, I silence my phone and disable social media notifications. I've learned that the biggest barrier to good writing is my own internal critic, so I give myself permission to write a "terrible first draft" just to get the ideas out, knowing I can fix it later.

How might I apply what I've learned to this class?

Understanding my own writing process is incredibly powerful for this class. I will apply this self-knowledge in a few key ways:

· For Journal Entries and Discussion Posts: I will recognize that these are "Ideation Phase" tasks. I might write the initial draft in a relaxed setting to encourage authentic reflection, then do a quick revision at my desk before submitting.

· For Major Assignments: I will consciously build both phases into my schedule. I won't wait for a "perfect, quiet day" to start a paper. Instead, I'll schedule time at a coffee shop to braindump and outline, and then I'll schedule separate, later blocks of time at my desk for the serious revision work. This makes large projects feel less daunting.

· For My Overall Goal (to become a more confident writer): My main goal is to reduce the anxiety I often feel about writing. By trusting my two-phase process, I can reassure myself that it's okay if the first words aren't perfect. The quality comes from the refinement, not from a mythical perfect first attempt. I will focus on starting early to allow both phases of my process to happen naturally.
