Scenario: Les Paul, a social studies teacher at Journey, is trying to take his students on a trip with less than a week’s notice and less than two weeks of school left. Another teacher, Erin McLaugherty, expressed her concerns regarding this. You received a students’ signed petition begging you to let them go on the trip. Meanwhile, two parents emailed you separately about this trip.

1. Erin McLaugherty has been complaining to you about the struggling ELLs in her class. She said they didn’t do homework, and when they did, the work was below standards. If they go on another trip, they won’t make up for the missing work, and they will fail ELA. She believes that it’s not her but the trip organizer’s job to help these ELLs learn English and pass ELA Regents. And if they fail, she shouldn’t be punished for someone else’s avoidance of work. After hearing that Mr Paul is taking students to Chuck-E-Cheese for fun, she says this to you:

2. Les Paul, second year social studies teacher. Mr Paul believes that the best way for ELLs to learn is to go out and experience the world. He vows to take students on trips every month. They’ve done a lot: a cruise touring Lower Manhattan, apple picking in a farm, and biking in Central Park. In addition, they went to the Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, and many museums. Some teachers protested that the trips don’t align with the Social Studies standards, but Mr Paul always finds a way to connect the trips to his curriculum. Additionally, you’ve talked to students and they told you that Mr Paul never collects any work after the trips. Mr Paul heard teachers complaining to you, so he said:

4. Parent Letter 1

Dear Principal,

I am Goliath’s mom, Orpah. As you know, Goliath has been working hard since he joined Journey and I am proud of his progress. However, this is his senior year, and he told me that other seniors were going on monthly trips, yet the only trips he’s been on were college trips. I love college trips, but how come they went apple picking, but Goliath hasn’t even been to one museum for four years? Why weren't Goliath and his classmates offered these trips?! You say equity all the time. Where’s the equity in that? Please fix this immediately as many parents are thinking of exposing this unfairness to the media.

Orpah

I am a single mom with three teenagers and I’m also taking care of David’s sick grandma. Honestly, we can’t afford the trip. However, I don’t want to stop David from having fun.
