WEEK 1 : AL QURAN AS THE BOOK OF GUIDANCE & ADAB IN SEEKING KNOWLEDGE

Al-Qur'an as the Book of Guidance

The Qur'an is the fundamental source of guidance for Muslims, covering all aspects of life—spiritual, ethical, social, and legal. It is referred to as "Hudan li-l-Muttaqīn" (guidance for the righteous) in several verses, emphasizing its role in leading humanity to the right path. The Qur'an:

1. Spiritual Guidance: It teaches about the Oneness of God (Tawhid), the purpose of human creation, and the path to success in this world and the Hereafter. It provides answers to fundamental questions about life, death, and the Hereafter. It constantly calls people to believe in Allah, reminding them of His mercy and power.

2. Ethical and Moral Framework: The Qur'an outlines ethical principles that help believers develop a righteous character. It promotes virtues such as honesty, patience, kindness, justice, and humility while warning against harmful traits like arrogance, greed, and cruelty. For instance, the Qur'an states: "Indeed, Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and generosity to relatives, and He forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression." (Qur'an 16:90)

3. Social and Legal Guidance: The Qur'an provides principles and laws on marriage, family, business, and interpersonal relationships, encouraging justice and compassion in all interactions. It provides guidelines for social justice, equality, and the rights and responsibilities of individuals.

4. Holistic Approach: Its teachings span all aspects of life, guiding believers on how to worship God, conduct daily affairs, interact with others, and strive for both worldly and spiritual success.

Adab (Etiquette) in Seeking Knowledge

In Islam, seeking knowledge is highly encouraged, and the Qur'an emphasizes this pursuit as a form of worship and a means to draw closer to Allah. However, there are essential etiquettes (adab) to follow when seeking knowledge:

1. Sincerity (Ikhlas): The primary intention of seeking knowledge should be to please Allah and benefit humanity. Knowledge should not be sought for fame, recognition, or worldly gain. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "Actions are judged by intentions." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

2. Humility: A seeker of knowledge must remain humble, realizing that true knowledge belongs to Allah. Arrogance or pride over one’s knowledge is condemned. The Qur'an reminds us: "Above every knowledgeable one is One who knows more." (Qur'an 12:76)

3. Patience and Perseverance: Gaining knowledge requires time, effort, and dedication. Patience is essential, as learning is a lifelong process. The Prophet (PBUH) advised: "Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise." (Sahih Muslim)

4. Respect for Teachers and Scholars: Showing respect to one’s teachers and scholars is a crucial aspect of adab in seeking knowledge. They are seen as vessels of divine guidance, and their contributions should be honored. This includes attentiveness, good manners, and appreciation.

5. Acting upon Knowledge: The ultimate purpose of knowledge in Islam is to act upon it. The Qur'an emphasizes that those who know must also practice what they learn. It condemns those who possess knowledge but fail to apply it: "Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture?" (Qur'an 2:44)

6. Purity of Heart and Mind: Before embarking on the journey of seeking knowledge, a person must purify their heart from envy, hatred, and worldly distractions. The Qur'an constantly reminds believers to cleanse their hearts, as true understanding and wisdom come from purity.

Conclusion

The Qur'an serves as the ultimate guide for human life, offering clear guidance on worship, social justice, and personal development. In seeking knowledge, Islam emphasizes the importance of good intentions, humility, and applying what one learns. Through adhering to the Qur'an’s teachings and practicing proper adab, Muslims aim to grow in understanding and to implement the divine guidance in every aspect of their lives.

WEEK 2 : HADITH JIBREEL AND THE PILLARS OF ISLAM

The Five Pillars of Islam are the fundamental acts of worship and practice that form the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and actions. These pillars represent the core beliefs and responsibilities of every Muslim, guiding their relationship with Allah and their role in society. They are:

1. Shahada (Testimony of Faith)

The Shahada is the declaration of faith, stating that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger:

- "Ashhadu alla ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah"

- Meaning: "I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His messenger."

- This proclamation affirms the core belief in the Oneness of Allah (Tawhid) and the prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH). It is the first step to becoming a Muslim and is central to all other acts of worship.

Salah (Prayer)

Salah is the mandatory prayer performed five times a day at specific times:

- Fajr (before dawn),

- Dhuhr (midday),

- Asr (afternoon),

- Maghrib (just after sunset),

- Isha (night).

Muslims face the Kaaba in Mecca during prayer. Salah is a direct connection between the worshiper and Allah, offering spiritual discipline and regular reflection. It is one of the most important daily acts of worship, emphasizing submission, humility, and gratitude.

3. Zakat (Charity or Almsgiving)

Zakat is the obligation to give a portion of one’s wealth to those in need, typically 2.5% of savings and assets annually.

- It is an act of social responsibility and purifies one’s wealth by acknowledging that it ultimately belongs to Allah.

- The beneficiaries of Zakat include the poor, needy, debtors, and those working to free captives, among others.

- Zakat is both a spiritual and social practice that helps reduce inequality and provides support to disadvantaged members of society.

4. Sawm (Fasting during Ramadan)

Sawm refers to the fasting from dawn until sunset during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

- Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and marital relations during the daylight hours.

- Fasting encourages self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and closeness to Allah.

- It is also a time for increased worship, reflection, and community spirit. The fast is broken at sunset with a meal known as Iftar, and the day begins with a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor.

- Ramadan concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

### 5. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca)

Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must undertake at least once in their lifetime if they are physically and financially able.

- Hajj takes place during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah and involves specific rituals including:

 - Circling the Kaaba,

 - Standing at the plain of Arafat,

 - The symbolic stoning of the devil.

- Hajj represents the equality of all Muslims before Allah, as everyone dresses in simple white garments and performs the same acts of worship. It commemorates the trials of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his family, and it strengthens the bonds of the global Muslim community.

Summary

The Five Pillars of Islam are a practical manifestation of a Muslim’s faith. They not only define the essential elements of Islamic belief and practice but also create a comprehensive framework for personal and social responsibility. These pillars are acts of worship that strengthen the believer’s connection to Allah and their commitment to serving others.

The Six Pillars of Iman (Faith) form the foundation of a Muslim's belief system in Islam. These pillars define the essential tenets of faith that every Muslim must believe in to be considered a believer (Mu’min). The six pillars are:

1. Belief in Allah (Tawhid)

- The belief in the absolute Oneness of Allah. He is the Creator, Sustainer, and Master of the universe, without partner or equal.

- This includes belief in Allah's names, attributes, and that He is the only one worthy of worship.

- Tawhid is the central concept of Islam and emphasizes that Allah is unique and transcendent.

2. Belief in the Angels (Mala'ika)

- Muslims believe in the existence of angels, who are created from light and serve as Allah’s obedient servants.

- Angels carry out various tasks, such as delivering divine revelations (e.g., Angel Jibril/Gabriel), recording deeds, and administering the affairs of the universe as instructed by Allah.

- Angels do not possess free will; they act only according to Allah’s commands.

3. Belief in the Divine Books (Kutub)

- Muslims believe that Allah revealed holy books to His prophets as guidance for humanity.

- These include:

 - The Torah (revealed to Musa/Moses),

 - The Zabur (Psalms, revealed to Dawud/David),

 - The Injil (Gospel, revealed to Isa/Jesus),

 - The Qur'an (revealed to Prophet Muhammad).

- The Qur'an is considered the final and complete revelation, and it supersedes the previous scriptures, which have been altered over time.

WEEK 6 : ADAB TOWARDS PARENTS AND NEIGHBOURS

In Islam, adab refers to proper manners, ethics, and respectful conduct towards others, especially in dealing with parents and neighbors. These teachings are emphasized in the Qur’an and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), showing the significance of kindness, respect, and responsibility.

Adab Towards Parents

Islam places a great emphasis on treating parents with utmost respect, kindness, and care. Here are the key principles of adab towards parents:

1. Obedience to Parents

 - Obeying and honoring one’s parents is a crucial obligation unless they command something contrary to Islamic teachings. The Qur'an says:

 - "And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination." (Surah Luqman, 31:14).

2. Kindness and Compassion

 - Always speak to parents in a soft, gentle tone, avoiding harsh or disrespectful words.

 - The Qur'an instructs: "Lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.'" (Surah Al-Isra, 17:24).

3. Caring for Their Needs

 - Especially in their old age, children are expected to care for their parents’ physical and emotional needs. Neglecting them in their time of need is considered sinful.

4. Making Du’a for Parents

 - Regularly praying for parents, asking Allah to forgive them and grant them mercy is a form of continuous adab.

 - A famous du’a is: "Rabbir-hamhuma kama rabbayanee sagheera" (My Lord, have mercy on them as they nurtured me when I was small).

5. Gratitude and Acknowledgement

 - Expressing gratitude to parents for their sacrifices is strongly encouraged. Allah mentions that being grateful to parents is linked to being grateful to Him.

Adab Towards Neighbors

Islam emphasizes the rights of neighbors and instructs Muslims to treat their neighbors with respect, care, and kindness, regardless of their faith. Some of the key aspects of adab towards neighbors include:

1. Kindness and Generosity

 - The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "He is not a believer whose neighbor is not safe from his harm." (Sahih Muslim).

 - Muslims are encouraged to share food, help, and assist their neighbors in times of need.

2. Avoiding Harm

 - A Muslim should not harm or inconvenience their neighbors in any way, whether through noise, property encroachment, or behavior.

 - Respecting their privacy and not spreading rumors or engaging in gossip about neighbors is also part of Islamic etiquette.

3. Being Helpful and Supportive

 - Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "The best of companions with Allah is the one who is best to his companion, and the best of neighbors to Allah is the one who is the best to his neighbor." (Tirmidhi).

 - Offering assistance, checking on their well-being, and being there during difficult times are examples of good adab.

4. Greeting and Warmth

 - Exchanging greetings (saying "Assalamu Alaikum") and maintaining friendly relations with neighbors helps create a peaceful and harmonious environment.

5. Respect for Their Rights

 - A neighbor’s rights include protection of their honor, privacy, and property. In Islam, taking good care of these rights is considered a form of worship.

---

Summary

Adab towards parents and neighbors in Islam is a combination of respect, kindness, and responsibility. Treating parents with care and compassion, particularly in old age, and ensuring the well-being of neighbors, whether by helping them or avoiding harm, are central to Islamic ethics. Following these guidelines brings harmony, strengthens relationships, and pleases Allah.
