•The belief is that the more money showered upon them,the more blessings come in the couple
•When you here something in the roof scratching you must have sundang/bolo in your bed.
•The tribal Waray believed in many deities, or diwata. There were almost 50 gods or goddesses in Waray mythology, for everything from rainbows, greediness, time, flying creatures, and poison, to different worlds. There were also many rituals, since they believed there were spirits in everything around them.

Traditions:
• Fiestas are celebrated with prayer, food/drinking dance and music.
•This tradition was handed down from many generations past. They also produce embroidered mats with flowers, birds, fishes, mermaids and scenes from folktales and legends

Province: Barangay San Fernando, Palo Leyte


Culture/s: Palo, officially the Municipality of Palo (Waray: Bungto han Palo; Tagalog: Bayan ng Palo), is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 76,213 people.
The municipality is the seat of most government departments, bureaus and regional offices of Region VIII, although some are situated at the neighboring city of Tacloban. The town is also home to the offices of the ecclesiastical government of the Archdiocese of Palo; the archbishop's residence; as well as the secondary, tertiary and theology seminaries of the archdiocese.

Belief/s: According to the belief today in Leyte, these fairies or encantados are spirits who live like men with their belongings in big trees and other selected places. They can appear to men they like. They come out of their places at moonlit nights and appear to men.



Tradition/s: This tradition was handed down from many generations past. They also produce embroidered mats with flowers, birds, fishes, mermaids and scenes from folktales and legends. Other traditional art forms of the region are pottery of Tanauan, Leyte and Biliran, basketry of Calbiga, Samar and Carigara, Leyte, Matalom, Leyte. Based on recent statistics, the region produces the biggest bulk of abaca for international export.

Farming and fishing are the main livelihood. In the entire cropping season, from land preparation up to post harvest, the farmers perform rituals invoking the nature spirits and ancestor spirits for a good harvest. This is also complemented by Christian customs as the recitation of novenas (9-day). Fisherfolk likewise ask permission from the water spirits for safety at sea and a good catch.

Fiestas are celebrated with prayer, food/drinking dance and music. The kuratsa – a courtship dance drama – highlights every occasion.



Custom/s: "TOURISM is all about respecting customs and traditions."

Karen Tiopes, regional director of Department of Tourism in Eastern Visayas, said this following the criticisms being thrown to the hooded all-male religious group Penitentes who are regularly taking part during Holy Week observance in Palo, Leyte.

Netizens and other travelers have mocked the group's traditional attire, likening it to the infamous "white supremacist" and "racist" Klu Klux Klan in the U.S.

"While I understand that the costumes worn by our Penitentes are similar to the ones worn by the Klu Klux Klan, we hope that instead of bashing, they try to find out the beginnings of this age old tradition," said Tiopes.

"While I respect their opinions, we also ask that they learn, understand, respect and appreciate a religious event of Eastern Visayas, that we, the locals, have been practicing for years and years now," added the tourism director.
