Mining lobbyist George M. Willing created the word "Idaho" and presented it to Congress in 1890 claiming it was a Native American Shoshone Indian word.
George M. Willing claimed the word meant 'Gem of the Mountains'.
The name was used for a new territory around Pike's Peak.

Although the Shoshone Indians did live in Idaho, Wyoming and Utah, they did not invent the word 'Idaho'.

By the time George's deception was discovered, the name 'Idaho' was already in common use.

WEIRD LAW:
Riding a merry-go-round on sundays is considered a crime. Ferris wheels are fine.

The name of this state is derived from the Indian word 'Teyshas', which means 'friends' or 'allies'. It comes from the Native American Caddo language.

In the 1540s Spanish explorers recorded the word as 'Tejas' or 'Teyas'. They used this name for the area north of the Rio Grande and east of New Mexico.

The concept of alliance or friendship is also incorporated into the state motto of Texas. Ironically, all Native American tribes in Texas were destroyed.

WEIRD LAW:
It is illegal to milk someone else's cow. Even if you desperately want a bowl of cornflakes.

The weirdest one yet; California thanks its name to the Spanish Conquistadors. The name was derived from a mythical island named 'Califia'.

The island was a mythical paradise described in a 16th century romance novel called 'Las Serges de Esplandian' written by Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo.

The island is described as a paradise inhabited by black amazon warriors. It was situated close to the Garden of Eden, and filled with gold.
The island was also home to Griffins which were kept as pets by the black amazon women and any man who found his way onto the island was slaughtered and turned into petfood for the griffins.

WEIRD LAW:
One is not permitted to wear cowboy-boots unless one already owns a minimum of 2 cows. Having 2 bulls is still up for debate.

Louisiana thanks its name to Frenchman Rene-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle, who named the state after King Louis XIV of France in 1682.

He did this because King Louis XIV was the longest reigning king of France and brought about a long period of unprecidented prosperity. He centralized power in Europe and made France the dominant power in the arts and sciences.

He was dubbed the sun-king by his people and built the Palace of Versailles.
After he died of gangrene, just four days short of his 77th birthday in 1715.

WEIRD LAW:
It is illegal to tie an alligator to a fire-hydrant. The law does not disclose anything about replacing the alligator with a crocodile.

In 1513, Florida was named by explorer Juan Ponce de Leon.
The explorer may have accompanied Columbus on his 1493 voryage to the New World.

He discovered the island of Puerto Rico and in pursuit of a rumored Fountain of Youth said to be located on an island called Bimini, Ponce de Leon discovered the coast of what is now known as Florida in 1513.
He was fatally wounded in an Indian attack soon after his arrival.

The word 'Florida' comes from the Spanish word 'Florido', which means 'full of flowers' or 'flowery'.

WEIRD LAW:
Oral sex is illegal in Florida. Well, that blows...

It is also illegal to sell your kids in Florida. At first this may not seem weird, but why did they come up with this law in the first place?
