Hey! I’m Nikos, I’m 13, and I live in Ilion, one of those Athens suburbs where something is always happening. My day began in the usual-fashioned Greek way: me struggling to wake up while eating yogurt with honey for breakfast, as my mom repeats the same thing over and over, “Let’s go, Nikos, school won’t wait for you,” and me thinking that, honestly… school should be more flexible towards both students and teachers (because, let’s be real, no one wants to be up at eight in the morning).

I walked outside, and the sun was already bright. That’s Athens for you. On the way to school, I passed by the little park next to my house with all the olive trees, and some guy in a nearby apartment was sitting on his balcony blasting one of Papazoglou’s “Αχ Ελλάδα σ’ αγαπώ”. Classic Greek song. Classic loud neighbor. Classic Greece.

At school, our first passing period of the day was chaos as usual—kids shouting, teachers pretending not to hear, people -me- wondering how these kids have the energy when I could barely stand upright, someone dropping their sandwich on the basketball court (RIP sandwich). My friends and I were talking about this project we were assigned for our European partners. We needed to write a story that showed our culture.

“I have zero ideas,” I told Maria.

“Let’s go somewhere after school. Maybe we’ll think of something,” she said.

After school, I was starving, so I stopped at a small taverna and ordered a souvlaki, the king of Greek fast food for me and quite possibly the other nine million residents of the country. The owner smiled and told me a proverb: “Όποιος δεν θέλει να ζυμώσει, δέκα μέρες κοσκινίζει.” Meaning: if you don’t want to do something, you’ll keep finding excuses. Okay, message received. Oh, I should mention that people here always (and I mean always) meddle in each other’s businesses for no true reason; so you can imagine the sheer quantity of passive aggressive comments I and others like me receive on the daily.

Maria and I met later at Tritsis Metropolitan Park, which is walking distance from school. Kids on bikes were zooming everywhere, couples were walking excruciatingly slow, the air smelled like coffee and smoke, and the trees made that soft rustling sound that always makes me feel like I’m in a coming-of-age film.

We sat on a bench and tried to work on our story. It went tragically. Brain = empty. Work completed = none.

But then we started talking about our day—breakfast, music, school, food, people—and we realized… That’s it. That’s our story. Our everyday Greek life.

“You know,” Maria said, “even if someone lives far away, maybe in Germany or Italy or Spain, they probably feel the same things we do, culture is a wide spectrum but feelings and experiences can’t differ that much, can they?”

I thought about it for a moment. “Yeah,” I said. “Different breakfasts, different songs… but the same kind of hopes and dreams and ambitions.”

And right there, in the middle of Athens, surrounded by olive trees and people chatting loudly on their phones (another Greek habit), we finished our stories—stories made of home, culture, and all the little things that make up our identities, who we are and where we come from.

Γεια! Είμαι ο Νίκος, είμαι 13 και μένω στο Ίλιον, ένα από αυτά τα προάστια της Αθήνας όπου πάντα κάτι παίζει. Η μέρα μου ξεκίνησε με τον πιο κλασικό ελληνικό τρόπο: εγώ να παλεύω να ξυπνήσω τρώγοντας γιαούρτι με μέλι και τη μαμά μου να λέει ξανά και ξανά «Άντε Νίκο, κουνήσου, το σχολείο δεν θα σε περιμένει», κι εγώ να σκέφτομαι πως, ειλικρινά… το σχολείο θα έπρεπε να είναι λίγο πιο ευέλικτο με μαθητές και καθηγητές (γιατί ας είμαστε σοβαροί, ΚΑΝΕΙΣ δεν θέλει να ξυπνάει στις οχτώ το πρωί).

Βγήκα έξω και ο ήλιος ήδη έκαιγε. Αθήνα, τι άλλο. Στον δρόμο για το σχολείο πέρασα από το μικρό παρκάκι με τις ελιές, δίπλα στο σπίτι μου, και κάποιος σε μια κοντινή πολυκατοικία είχε βάλει στο τέρμα το «Αχ Ελλάδα σ’ αγαπώ» του Παπάζογλου. Κλασικό ελληνικό τραγούδι. Κλασικός φωνακλάς γείτονας. Κλασική Ελλάδα.

Στο σχολείο, το πρώτο διάλειμμα ήταν χάος όπως πάντα—παιδιά να ουρλιάζουν, καθηγητές να κάνουν πως δεν ακούνε και άτομα (όπως εγώ) να αναρωτιούνται πώς οι άλλοι έχουν τόση ενέργεια ενώ εγώ μετά βίας στεκόμουν όρθιος. Κάποιος πέταξε το τοστ του στο γήπεδο μπάσκετ (RIP τοστ) ενώ με τους φίλους μου μιλούσαμε για μια εργασία που μας είχαν βάλει για τους Ευρωπαίους συνεργάτες μας στο eTwinning. Έπρεπε να γράψουμε μια ιστορία που να δείχνει την κουλτούρα μας.

«Δεν έχω ΚΑΜΙΑ ιδέα», είπα στη Μαρία.
«Πάμε κάπου μετά το σχολείο. Μπορεί να μας έρθει τίποτα», μου είπε.

Μετά το σχολείο πεινούσα απίστευτα, οπότε σταμάτησα σε ένα μικρό σουβλατζίδικο και πήρα ένα σουβλάκι, τον βασιλιά του ελληνικού fast food για μένα και μάλλον και για τα υπόλοιπα εννιά εκατομμύρια άτομα στη χώρα. Ο ιδιοκτήτης χαμογέλασε και μου είπε μια παροιμία: «Όποιος δεν θέλει να ζυμώσει, δέκα μέρες κοσκινίζει». Δηλαδή: άμα δεν θες να κάνεις κάτι, όλο δικαιολογίες θα βρίσκεις. ΟΚ, μήνυμα ελήφθη. Α, και να πω ότι εδώ οι άνθρωποι ΠΑΝΤΑ (και εννοώ ΠΑΝΤΑ) μπλέκονται στις ζωές των άλλων χωρίς λόγο· οπότε φαντάσου πόσα πειραχτικά σχόλια ακούμε καθημερινά.

Με τη Μαρία συναντηθήκαμε αργότερα στο Πάρκο Τρίτση, που είναι κοντά στο σχολείο. Παιδιά με ποδήλατα ξεχύνονταν σφαίρα από παντού, ζευγάρια περπατούσαν απελπιστικά αργά, ο αέρας μύριζε καφέ και τσιγάρο και τα δέντρα έκαναν αυτόν τον ήχο που πάντα με κάνει να νιώθω σαν να είμαι σε ταινία εποχής.

Καθίσαμε σε ένα παγκάκι και προσπαθήσαμε να δουλέψουμε την ιστορία μας. Πήγαινε τραγικά. Εγκέφαλος = άδειος. Δουλειά = μηδέν.

Αλλά μετά αρχίσαμε να μιλάμε για τη μέρα μας—πρωινό, μουσική, σχολείο, φαγητό, ανθρώπους—και τότε καταλάβαμε… αυτό είναι. Αυτή είναι η ιστορία μας. Η καθημερινή ελληνική ζωή.

«Ξέρεις», είπε η Μαρία, «ακόμα κι αν κάποιος ζει μακριά, π.χ. στη Γερμανία ή την Ιταλία ή την Ισπανία, μάλλον τα ίδια νιώθει. Η κουλτούρα αλλάζει, αλλά τα συναισθήματα και οι εμπειρίες δεν διαφέρουν και τόσο, έτσι δεν είναι;»

Το σκέφτηκα λίγο. «Ναι», είπα. «Άλλα πρωινά, άλλα τραγούδια… αλλά τα ίδια όνειρα, οι ίδιες ελπίδες και φιλοδοξίες».

Και εκεί, στη μέση της Αθήνας, ανάμεσα σε ελιές που ψιθύριζαν και ανθρώπους που μιλούσαν δυνατά στο κινητό τους (άλλη μια ελληνική συνήθεια), τελειώσαμε την ιστορία μας—μια ιστορία φτιαγμένη από πατρίδα, κουλτούρα και όλα αυτά τα μικρά πράγματα που μας κάνουν αυτό που είμαστε και δείχνουν από πού ερχόμαστε.

Ένα δροσερό φθινοπωρινό πρωινό σε μια μικρή πόλη της Ανατολίας, η Ετζέ βγήκε από το σπίτι της τη στιγμή που η μυρωδιά του φρεσκοψημένου ψωμιού ερχόταν από τον φούρνο της γειτονιάς και η προσευχή ακουγόταν απαλά στους δρόμους. Η μητέρα της της έδωσε ένα ζεστό σιμίτ και η Ετζέ κρατούσε ένα μικρό ποτήρι ζεστό τσάι, στο λεπτό γυάλινο ποτήρι που χρησιμοποιούν πάντα στην Τουρκία.

Καθώς περπατούσε προς το σχολείο, έβλεπε γνώριμες εικόνες: μαγαζάτορες να ανοίγουν τα καταστήματά τους, έναν ηλικιωμένο να χαιρετά όλους με «Γκιουνάιντιν» (καλημέρα) και γάτες να τεντώνονται νωχελικά στα πεζοδρόμια. Η Ετζέ χαμογέλασε, θυμούμενη τη φράση της γιαγιάς της «Erken kalkan yol alır», που σημαίνει πως όποιος σηκώνεται νωρίς προχωρά πιο μακριά στη ζωή.

Η μέρα ήταν ξεχωριστή. Ο Ντενίζ, ένας μαθητής ανταλλαγής που επισκεπτόταν για πρώτη φορά την Τουρκία, θα περνούσε τη μέρα στο σχολείο της. Η Ετζέ ήθελε να γνωρίσει την πραγματική τουρκική καθημερινότητα και όχι μόνο αυτά που βλέπουν οι τουρίστες. Όταν έφτασε ο Ντενίζ, τον καλωσόρισε χαμογελαστή λέγοντάς του «Hoş geldin, evimize hoş geldin» — «καλώς ήρθες, στο σπίτι μας». Δεν αντάλλαξαν απλώς χειραψία· αγκαλιάστηκαν φιλικά, κι έτσι ο Ντενίζ ένιωσε αμέσως άνετα.

Η σχολική ζωή ήταν ζωντανή και γνώριμη. Οι μαθητές έμεναν στην ίδια τάξη και οι καθηγητές άλλαζαν αίθουσες. Στα διαλείμματα οι διάδρομοι γέμιζαν φωνές, γέλια και παιδιά που μοιράζονταν σνακ. Κάποιος πρόσφερε σπόρια, κάποιος άλλος λίγη σοκολάτα και όλοι μιλούσαν ταυτόχρονα. Ο Ντενίζ εντυπωσιάστηκε από το πόσο γρήγορα τον αντιμετώπισαν σαν παλιό φίλο.

Στο μεγάλο διάλειμμα βγήκαν στην αυλή. Η Ετζέ άνοιξε το τάπερ της και με περηφάνια έδειξε στον Ντενίζ τι της είχε ετοιμάσει η μητέρα της: σπιτικό μπουρέκι, ντολμαδάκια και ένα μικρό δοχείο με γιαούρτι. «Η μαμά μου τα έφτιαξε από το πρωί», του είπε. Ο Ντενίζ τα δοκίμασε όλα και χαμογέλασε λέγοντας πως ένιωθε σαν να έτρωγε στο σπίτι του.

Μετά το σχολείο περπάτησαν σε στενά δρομάκια με πέτρινα σπίτια και μικρούς κήπους για τσάι. Κάθισαν για λίγο ακούγοντας τον ήχο από τα κουταλάκια που χτυπούσαν στα ποτήρια. Η Ετζέ σιγοτραγουδούσε ένα γνωστό τουρκικό ποπ τραγούδι που έπαιζε από ένα ραδιόφωνο, ενώ λίγο πιο πέρα ένας ηλικιωμένος έπαιζε τάβλι με έναν φίλο του, τσακώνοντας χαρούμενα για τα ζάρια.

Κάθε Δευτέρα πρωί, η Ιοάνα ξεκινά την εβδομάδα της με ένα συνηθισμένο ρουμανικό πρωινό γεμάτο ενέργεια: μια μερντένεα — μια νόστιμη πίτα γεμισμένη με τυρί — μαζί με ένα ποτήρι κεφίρ. Της αρέσει να αρχίζει τη μέρα της τρώγοντας πρώτα πρωινό.

Έτσι, ένα Δευτεριάτικο πρωινό, καθώς περπατούσε προς το σχολείο και σκεφτόταν τα μαθήματα και τις εργασίες που την περίμεναν, ένιωσε για λίγο πως θα προτιμούσε να τα αφήσει και απλώς να χαλαρώσει. Τότε όμως θυμήθηκε την παροιμία «Nu lăsa pe mâine ce poți face azi», που σημαίνει «Μην αφήνεις για αύριο ό,τι μπορείς να κάνεις σήμερα», και αυτό της έδωσε ξανά κίνητρο.

Όταν έφτασε στο σχολείο, συνάντησε μια φίλη της που μόλις είχε επιστρέψει από πρόγραμμα ανταλλαγής. Πρώτα έδωσαν τα χέρια και μετά αγκαλιάστηκαν, ενώ άρχισαν να λένε τα νέα τους. Η Ιοάνα χάρηκε πολύ που την είδε και συνέχισε τη μέρα της με καλή διάθεση.

Στη μέση της σχολικής ημέρας υπήρχε ένα διάλειμμα 20 λεπτών, όπου η Ιοάνα και η παρέα της μαζεύτηκαν για να μιλήσουν για την εμπειρία του Ράζβαν στο εξωτερικό. Συζήτησαν επίσης για ένα επερχόμενο τεστ Ιστορίας και πρόλαβαν να φάνε και το μεσημεριανό τους.

Μετά το σχολείο, η Ιοάνα πήγε στο σπίτι της καλύτερής της φίλης, όπου η γιαγιά της είχε μαγειρέψει σαρμάλε και μαμαλίγκα — ένα παραδοσιακό φαγητό που αγαπούν πολλοί. Το φαγητό ήταν υπέροχο και πέρασαν πολύ όμορφα.

Αργότερα, έκλεισαν τη μέρα τους με μια βόλτα στην πόλη, απολαμβάνοντας τη θέα των Καρπαθίων στο Μπρασόβ, όπου υπάρχει μια επιγραφή στα βουνά που θυμίζει το Hollywood, ενώ από το ραδιόφωνο έπαιζε το γνωστό τραγούδι «Mr. Saxobeat» της Alexandra Stan.

Οι μέρες της μπορεί να είναι απλές, αλλά η Ρουμανία πάντα την κάνει να νιώθει πως ανήκει εκεί.

Ένα ζεστό φθινοπωρινό πρωινό στο Ζάγκρεμπ, η Ιβάνα βγήκε από το σπίτι της στις 7:20, έτοιμη να ξεκινήσει τη μέρα της και πολύ ενθουσιασμένη που θα γνώριζε μια νέα μαθήτρια ανταλλαγής από την Ουκρανία. Στον δρόμο για το σχολείο σταμάτησε στο τοπικό αρτοποιείο και αγόρασε μπουρέκ, μια πίτα γεμισμένη με κιμά. Ήταν το ιδανικό πρωινό για μια γεμάτη μέρα. Βιαζόταν, γιατί ήξερε πως η παροιμία «Tko rano rani, dvije sreće grabi» λέει την αλήθεια: όποιος ξεκινά νωρίς, καταφέρνει περισσότερα.

Καθώς πλησίαζε στο σχολείο, την είδε — τη νέα μαθήτρια που είχε έρθει την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα. Τη λέγανε Άνια και οι δυο τους είχαν ήδη δεθεί. Όμως, όταν η Ιβάνα πήγε να τη χαιρετήσει με φιλί στο μάγουλο, όπως συνηθίζεται στην Κροατία, έπαθε… ένα «κρύο ντους»: η Άνια δεν ήταν συνηθισμένη σε τέτοιον χαιρετισμό. Επίσης της φάνηκε περίεργο το κροατικό σχολικό σύστημα: τα μαθήματα διαρκούν 45 λεπτά και οι δεκατετράχρονοι έχουν 7 ή 8 μαθήματα την ημέρα, με μικρά διαλείμματα 5, 10 ή 15 λεπτών.

Στο μεγάλο διάλειμμα των 15 λεπτών τα κορίτσια βγήκαν στην αυλή και κάθισαν σε ένα παγκάκι. Ένα δέντρο τα προστάτευε από τον χρυσαφένιο ήλιο. Η Ιβάνα έβγαλε από την τσάντα της κάτι νόστιμο: μια τυρόπιτα που λέγεται štrukla. Τη μοιράστηκαν.

Όταν τελείωσε το σχολείο στις 15:05, περπάτησαν προς το σπίτι μέσα από δρόμους γεμάτους μεγάλα σπίτια και πολυκατοικίες, με πολλές βελανιδιές και σημύδες. Καθώς περπατούσαν, η Ιβάνα άρχισε να τραγουδά το γνωστό τραγούδι «Ja volim samo sebe» του κροατικού συγκροτήματος Psihomodo Pop. Ήταν το πρώτο τραγούδι από αυτή την περιοχή της Ευρώπης που έπαιξε στο MTV — και μάλιστα στα αγγλικά! Η Ιβάνα το τραγουδούσε και στις δύο γλώσσες και η Άνια διασκέδαζε πολύ.

Όταν έφτασαν στο σπίτι της Ιβάνα, αγκαλιάστηκαν — η Άνια έμαθε ότι αυτό είναι πολύ συνηθισμένο στην Κροατία. Συμφώνησαν να ξαναβρεθούν αργότερα για να πάνε σε ένα μουσείο ή σε μια γκαλερί. Η Ιβάνα ένιωθε χαρούμενη που ήταν κορίτσι από το Ζάγκρεμπ και που γνώρισε μια μαθήτρια από άλλη χώρα, ελπίζοντας ότι τη βοήθησε έστω και λίγο να καταλάβει μια διαφορετική κουλτούρα.

Ένα δροσερό φθινοπωρινό πρωινό στο Νίντεγκεν, η Νοέμι βγήκε βιαστικά από το διαμέρισμά της κρατώντας στο ένα χέρι ένα φρέσκο ψωμάκι από το κοντινό φούρνο, γεμισμένο με βούτυρο και τυρί, και στο άλλο ένα ζεστό ρόφημα σοκολάτας. Της άρεσε να ξεκινά τη μέρα της όπως πολλοί Γερμανοί: απλά, ζεστά και γρήγορα.

Καθώς ο ήλιος ανέβαινε στον δρόμο για το σχολείο, θυμήθηκε μια παλιά φράση της γιαγιάς της:
«Το πρωινό έχει χρυσάφι στο στόμα».
Στη Γερμανία αυτό σημαίνει ότι όποιος ξεκινά τη μέρα του νωρίς έχει περισσότερες πιθανότητες να του πάνε όλα καλά. Χαμογέλασε, γιατί της φαινόταν απόλυτα σωστό εκείνη τη μέρα.

Η μέρα ήταν ξεχωριστή, γιατί η Ελόρα, η Αλβανίδα μαθήτρια ανταλλαγής, θα ερχόταν στο σχολείο της. Η Νοέμι ήθελε να της δείξει πώς είναι μια τυπική γερμανική σχολική μέρα. Πριν αρχίσει το μάθημα των Αγγλικών, εκείνη και οι φίλοι της χαιρέτησαν την Ελόρα με μια φιλική χειραψία. Η Ελόρα γέλασε, γιατί ήταν συνηθισμένη στα φιλιά στο μάγουλο, αλλά ένιωσε ευπρόσδεκτη και χαρούμενη.

Ήταν η πρώτη κανονική σχολική μέρα της Ελόρα στη Γερμανία και η Νοέμι ανυπομονούσε να της δείξει πώς λειτουργούν τα πράγματα. Όπως σε πολλά γερμανικά σχολεία, η μέρα ήταν χωρισμένη σε μαθήματα των 45 λεπτών με μικρά διαλείμματα ανάμεσα. Η Ελόρα εντυπωσιάστηκε που δεν υπήρχαν σχολικές στολές και που οι μαθητές άλλαζαν αίθουσα ανάλογα με το μάθημα. Όλα της φαίνονταν καινούρια, αλλά της άρεσε να ανακαλύπτει αυτές τις μικρές λεπτομέρειες της καθημερινής σχολικής ζωής.

Αργότερα, στη Μεγάλη Παύση, όλοι βγήκαν στην αυλή, ό,τι καιρό κι αν είχε. Κάθισαν στη σκιά ενός μεγάλου έλατου με μακριά κλαδιά και μαλακές πράσινες βελόνες. Η Νοέμι έδειξε στην Ελόρα το αγαπημένο της σνακ: ένα κομμάτι σνίτσελ με μουστάρδα μέσα σε ψωμάκι που είχε φέρει από το σπίτι. Ήταν το αγαπημένο της φαγητό.

Στον δρόμο της επιστροφής στο σπίτι περπάτησαν μέσα σε ένα τυπικό τοπίο της περιοχής Άιφελ: μεγάλα χωράφια που απλώνονταν μέχρι τον ορίζοντα, ένα μικρό ποτάμι που περνούσε ανάμεσα από κόκκινους βράχους και χρυσαφένια φθινοπωρινά δέντρα που σκέπαζαν τους λόφους γύρω από το Νίντεγκεν. Η Νοέμι σιγοτραγουδούσε το γνωστό γερμανικό τραγούδι «99 Luftballons» της Nena, ένα χιτ της δεκαετίας του ’80 που μιλά για παρεξηγήσεις που οδηγούν σε συγκρούσεις και πόλεμο. Είναι ακόμα πολύ γνωστό στη Γερμανία και η Ελόρα το αναγνώρισε αμέσως.

Ήταν μια απλή μέρα, αλλά γεμάτη από εκείνες τις μικρές στιγμές που κάνουν τη Γερμανία να μοιάζει με σπίτι.

On a cold winter morning, Katarzyna was eating her jajecznica (scrambled eggs) when she realised that her lessons were starting in 10 minutes. She panicked and ran out of the house. Fortunately, she managed to catch the bus.

While Katarzyna was going to school, she realised that she had taken the wrong bus, which was going only halfway to her school. She was sad, but then she remembered her mother saying, “Lepszy wróbel w garści niż gołąb na dachu,” which lifted her spirits. After a walk, Katarzyna was finally at school!

That day at school was amazing. Katarzyna’s exchange partner, Elizabeth, came to her town to spend a day at her school. Katarzyna wanted her partner to experience what a typical Polish school looks like. Before the maths class, everyone greeted Elizabeth with a friendly handshake and a smile, which made her feel welcome.

It was Elizabeth’s first full school day in Poland, and she was excited to see how different it was compared to England. In Polish schools, lessons are 45 minutes long, and there are breaks in between. Most breaks last 10 minutes, apart from the breakfast and lunch breaks, which are 20 and 25 minutes long. Elizabeth was surprised that there were school uniforms and that teachers went to each class instead of students. Most things felt strange and new to her, but in the end, she really enjoyed being in the shoes of a Polish student.

After the fifth lesson, Katarzyna had a long lunch break. In the cafeteria, she was served the first course, which was rosół (chicken soup). Many people eat rosół for dinner. For the second course, Katarzyna got pierogi (dumplings). She liked them very much but didn’t expect there to be dessert as well. For dessert, Katarzyna had sernik (cheesecake). After lunch, she had one more lesson and then went home.

When the students came back home from school, they wanted to relax. They went to Katarzyna’s room and played some music. Katarzyna wanted to show Elizabeth some Polish music, so she played “Ramię w Ramię” by Viki Gabor and Kayah and “Sokoły” by Krzysztof Krawczyk. After dinner, they went to a Polish park and fed the ducks.

On a beautiful sunny spring day, Maria receives a message from Kevin, a childhood friend who has been living in the United States for many years. Kevin asks her to spend a day together with two other childhood friends, Paolo and Pietro. He was eager to relive Italian culture and traditions and, above all, to taste some good food! 

So, Maria, Pietro and Paolo decide to take him to Rome, organizing every detail of their day together.

We woke up very early in the morning, took the train and headed to our favourite café in front of the Colosseum. ‘Wonderful!’ said Kevin. He was speechless at the beauty of one of the most famous monuments in the world! 

We offered him our typical breakfast: a nice cappuccino and a cream croissant. But not satisfied, he also wanted to try the famous ‘maritozzo romano’, a soft bun filled with plenty of whipped cream. ‘How delicious,’ said Kevin!

After breakfast, we organized a guided tour to visit the most famous places in the Eternal City! After visiting the Colosseum, the guide took us on a walk through the Roman Forum and showed us the city's five Imperial Forums. Kevin looked so happy and curious and asked the guide lots of questions. After the Imperial Forums, we headed to the Trevi Fountain. There we all threw a coin following the typical tradition...that means with our backs turned, our right hand on our left shoulder and our eyes closed. 

This is a famous tradition that promises a return to Rome.

We continued our tour by carriage to see the historic centre (Piazza di Spagna, Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona). It was almost lunchtime, so when we reached Piazza Navona, we went to “Camillo”, one of the most famous local restaurants. We ordered traditional Roman dishes: carbonara, coda alla vaccinara and amatriciana. Of course, we couldn't end our lunch without tasting the famous tiramisù, a dessert loved throughout Italy!

“This food is so delicious, it's mouth-watering!” commented Kevin with his American accent. We all burst out laughing because it had been a long time since we had heard that expression...

While we enjoyed our meal, we talked a lot about our daily lives and school, remembering moments we spent together when we were very young. As we talked, Kevin watched us closely and at one point asked us, “Why do Italians move hands while talking?” – "That's a classic foreigner question" we tought...  Pietro replied: “we commonly use gestures to emphasize speech, express emotions and clarify concepts”.

After lunch, we headed to the station, crossing Villa Borghese, Rome's most famous park with its vast gardens. Once we arrived at the station, we took the train back to Colleferro, where Kevin's parents were waiting for him. 

As we walked through our town, Paolo suggested, “Why don't we take Kevin to our school? It's open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, so we can show him our decorated classrooms and colourful lockers!”. 

“Great idea!” exclaimed Kevin.

When we entered the school, we met some teachers from the after-school clubs. They were music, theatre and sports teachers. Then we visited the different learning environments, each decorated differently according to the school subjects. The school tour ended right in front of a mural with the famous proverb “Chi trova un amico, trova un tesoro” (meaning “A friend is a treasure”)

Unfortunately, our day came to an end and Kevin left with his parents. During the journey, he sent us a message to thank us for sharing moments of deep friendship. In the message, he also sent us an old traditional Italian song, “Sarà perché ti amo” by Ricchi e Poveri. 

His parents were listening to it on the way back to the airport and he had already learned the chorus!

A Wonderful Day in Greece 

It is a beautiful spring morning in Greece. The warm sun shines through Elena’s bedroom window and wakes her up. She is a bit late for school but like many Greeks, she can’t start her day without coffee. She stops by the small coffee shop on her way to school and orders her daily sweet frappé and a fresh bougatsa for breakfast.

As Elena walks through the quiet streets, she observes the beauty around her. The smell of orange blossoms fills the air and birds sing happily. Small houses with balconies full of colorful flowers line the road, while some Greek flags wave softly in the warm spring breeze. She takes a sip of her frappé and smiles. She is late but the warm sun makes her feel calm and happy. She passes a small bakery, where the smell of fresh koulouria and warm bread reminds her of her childhood. 

Soon, Elena meets her friends Maria and Michaela near the school. They greet each other with smiles, laughter, and warm gestures. Like most Greek students, they talk about school, exams, and their plans for the weekend. They are tired of studying but excited because summer is getting closer every day.

At exactly 8:00 a.m., the school bell rings. All the students gather in the schoolyard for the morning assembly. They say a short prayer together and the principal makes announcements and gives directions to the whole school community. After that, the teachers unlock the classrooms, and the lessons begin.

After school the girls decide go for a quick coffee. They arrive at a crowded cafeteria, where a Greek song is playing from the speakers. It is “Dinei Ta Filia” by Notis Sfakianakis, a very popular Greek singer. Michaela smiles because it is her favorite song. They sit at a table away from the crowd and start chatting. Maria is worried about a student whose grades are awful. Elena reminds her friends of a traditional Greek saying her grandmother often used to say: “Όπως έστρωσες θα κοιμηθείς,” which means that you must live with the consequences of your actions. Then, they head home after paying the bill and tipping the waiter.

When Elena arrives home, she does her homework. Later, her mother prepares dinner — gemista, Elena’s favorite traditional Greek dish. She enjoys it very much, as it reminds her of family and home.

In the evening, she goes to her private tutoring lessons, which last until 9:00 p.m. When she finally returns home, she feels exhausted. She takes a hot shower, prepares her school bag for the next day, and goes to sleep.

It was just a wonderful usual day in Greece.

At the gate of the ‘ Collège Joseph Calvet’, Louise took out her school card to show it to the supervisors  and entered. From afar, she waved at some of her classmates before greeting Ainoha She gave her two kisses on the cheek. In the south of France, people usually give each other two kisses but in some regions they give three and sometimes even four. Ainoha grinned  when learning that it was the busiest day of the week: 4 sessions of 55 minutes in the morning with only a 15-minute recess and three other classes in the afternoon !  After the two first lessons , the rang bell again to announce a fifteen minutes break . Louise bought two round buns with two dark chocolate bars with the 1-euro piece she had kept at the bottom of her pocket. The money raised by the college association would be used to finance future projects for the students. After a long morning , at 12:30 it was time to have lunch at  the canteen. Today an organic menu was offered. Ainoha was surprised to learn that once a week there was a vegetarian meal too . The two girls had plenty of time to enjoy the lunch break . They  sat  under the mulberry trees, chat and laugh with other friends. Classes resumed at 2 o’clock. At the four o’clock  break,, the two girls were quite tired but  there was still an hour to go before the end of the school day!

Finally 5 o’clock! Difficult to concentrate at the end of the day! On the return bus, Louise had only one wish:  relax and listen to Jul’s latest song while admiring the landscape : the vineyards whose red, orange, or yellow leaves looked like a painting ,cypresses, olive and almond trees  and in the distance the rocks of the Fenouillèdes mountains. She still had some homework to do but was already looking forward to spending the next day  with  Ainoha.
