Mass Graves of Indigenous Individuals found in Canada

In 2021, there was a discovery of a mass grave with more than 200 indigenous children found at a former Kamloops Indian Residential School run by the Catholic Church from 1890 to 1978. These institutions across Canada were attended by approximately 150,000 children who experienced forced labor, physical, emotional and sexual abuse. In 2008, the Canadian Government apologized in Parliament and admitted to physical and sexual abuse being rampant in the schools.
I did like this news source. After doing research, I saw that the NY Post is not always the most credible source, rated from the Ad Fontes Chart. NY Post has a general bias that skews right, but is recognized as generally reliable. The form of bias that could relate to this current event is that it is American reporters writing about a foreign affair. However, I felt that the information given in the article matched that of other news sources, and gave accurate background information about the case. The author, Gabrielle Fonrouge, has also written more than 20 articles for the NY Post and appears to be a trustworthy author.

A month after the findings at Kamloops, more than 750 unmarked graves were found near the former Marieval Indian Residential School after an investigation conducted by the Cowesses First Nation using Radar Scanning. The school operated under the Roman Catholic Church from 1899 to 1996, with the goal to assimilate Indigeous children into the Canadian Society. During the 1960s, the church removed the headstones to the graves of the children and adults.
I really enjoyed this article. It went into great depth into the background information of the issue, and even talked about the side effects that are still being felt by Indigenous communities today, such as a legacy of drug and alcohol abuse. Additionally, NBC is also recognized as a reliable source from the Ad Fontes Chart. It has accurate analysis and fact reporting, and has a bias that skews slightly left.

Pope Francis visited Canada to apologize to Indigenous peoples for the abuse endured at the Catholic Schools, in an effort to reconcile with Native Communities. This visit stirred emotions across Canada as survivors were seeking more than words, but wanted justice for the abusers.
I did like this article, and it was recommended to me by a classmate. It was a Montana News Publication, written by The Associated Press. Although the Associated Press is not found on the Ad Fontes Media Chart, The Associated Press is regarded as the most widely used news service in the world, and has a high reliability rating. I felt as though the article was able to clearly articulate why Indigenous individuals did not feel relief from the Pope's words.

A series of stabbings near Saskatchewan left 10 Indigenous people dead and 15 wounded. The killings appear to be both targeted and random, and is regarded as one of the deadliest mass killings in Canada.
This post was also written by The Associated Press, so I know I can trust the information being written. I also felt this was an important article to add because it demonstrates that Indigenous peoples are still facing brutality. Since the colonization of the British, Native Americans have faced unfair treatment that has yet to be resolved.

The Chief of the Saskatchewan First Nation stated that healing was needed after 10 people were killed, and 18 were injured. The key suspect, Myles Sanderson went into a medical distress shortly after being arrested in a ditch off the freeway, and the other suspect, Sanderson's brother, was found dead. The First Nation gathered together in hopes that the affected families would find healing, and honor their loved ones.
After researching this news source, I found that it has minimal bias and is very credible due to its balanced story selection and minimal use of emotional language. Although the article was pretty vague, it was all factual and expanded upon what was most important which made the article easy to understand.

Every one of their authors is of Indigenous descent, and lives within the area that the story is covering.

After the Saskatchewan stabbings, the main suspect, 32-year-old Myles Sanderson died shortly after being brought into police custody due to the consumption of drugs. Sanderson consumed drugs shortly before being taken into custody, and quickly fell into medical distress. Due to this, there will not be a public criminal trial, which will leave the grieving families with many unanswered questions.
The Chief coroner said that in 2023, public inquests will be opened for the stabbing victims, and jurors will be asked to determine Sanderson's cause of death to determine whether CPR or Narcan was used.
I have really enjoyed CBC News. It is a Canadian news source, that has a specific tab just for Indigenous news with journalists based in the cities where these tragedies are occuring. It has a great reliability rating, and includes interview statements from locals. The author, Kendall Latimer, is also a local from Saswetchewan, and has written many other articles for CBC. and I do not feel as if I am reading biased information.

This is an article that overviews the news report that aired on TV after the findings of the mass graves. The original broadcast took place in Canada where the graves were found, and showed the exact spot where the first discoveries were made. They even brought some survivors into the old school, and they showed the rooms where they endured sexual and verbal abuse. They shared stories of their past, many of which they tried to forget about, but could not. One survivor described being renamed "65" and another talked about the rape of her cousin when she was only 8 years old.
I watched this episode of 60 Minutes when it first aired. This is what made me decide to do my current event on the Indigenous People in Canada. I watched 60 Minutes throughout all of High School, and I have learned so much from watching these episodes. This episode is what has been the center around which I have based my findings.
The Ad Fontes Media shows CBC News to have a good reliability rating, in regards to analysis and fact reporting. While it does tend to favor the left, its news reporting is very neutral, and I agree with this. I feel that there were no biases in this source in regard to my current event.

While it does not post constantly about frequent updates of large events, the page focuses on recognizing the event, and posting resources for those that need it.
I like this account because it is verified, which brings up its reliability rating.

The first form of evidence found of the Indigenous graves was a child's rib bone and tooth found beneath an apple orchard. However, many of the survivors were upset that forensic evidence was needed to prove that hundreds of children were killed at the Catholic Residential Schools. These foundings also brought about many mixed emotions. Many are feeling anger that there is not an ongoing investigation looking into the crimes, while others are feeling traumatized reliving their past abuse, and mourning for all of the missing children.
I really enjoyed this article. It included many interview statements from victims and researchers, and the author, Paula Newton, has written more than 20 articles for CNN, and has a very high reputation. According to the Ad Fontes Media Chart, CNN has a high-reliability rating, and a bias that skews slightly left. I agree with this rating, because I found the source to be very well writte, it went into greatdeoth, more than other articles, and its information aligned with my other sources.

The Acorn is the newspaper for the town I grew up in, named Moorpark, CA. I found this article from May 7, and it was about US Representative Julia Brownley presenting $250,000 to create an Indigenous studies program at Cal State Channel Islands, a university about 20 minutes from my house. The money was given to a Chumash elder, for the Chumash once lived on the land that the school is now on. In order to ensure the curriculum is effective and accurate, the Provost and teachers have met with the Chumash Community for the overall success of the course.
Although this does not directly correlate with my current event, I do think that it is important that we are acknowledging advancements within the Indigenous community, for the Chumash were expansive on the land we now live.
