Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

The third stage is similar to the second because they both involve knowing what is allowed despite what is wanted. They differ because, unlike the previous stage, this stage refers to the idea of testing something new without knowing if it is allowed or not. When I was in this stage, I would run away from my mom in the store, wanting to explore the store. But my mom, once she found me or when I came back to her, would always explain to me why what I did was wrong. Eventually, as I progressed in this stage, I was able to "regulate these opposing drives" because I might want to do it, but that doesn't meant it is something that should be done.

The first stage of development by Erikson is an important step that sets up the baby for the rest of the stages. This stage is about the basic trust between baby and parents that will set up how the baby trusts, or mistrusts, future adult figures in their life. My parents told me that I was fairly easy for other people to hold or take care of. This shows that I had learned to trust very quickly and gave trust to others easily because of the "reciprocal, enduring tie between" my parents and me.

During the second stage that Erikson found is the reasoning behind the "terrible two's" because the child is learning how to "balance between self-determination and control by others'. As a child, I was very set on doing something myself. My parents were patient with me but they also taught me during this stage that, even though I might want to play with my toys, I need to listen to them and eat my lunch.

Stage four is about receiving "praise" from those around you. When I was in this stage, I don't think I received much "praise" from others and I had a "lack of motivation" because I didn't try as hard to understand the material in school. The resolve to this was when I realized that showing my teachers that I was studying and working hard to understand the material would get me both "praise" from my teachers and I felt industrious because I was able to "learn skills of the culture" around me.

This stage is about knowing "Who I am", it is about finding yourself through gaining more responsibility. This stage was hard for me because I didn't have many responsibilities that would help me discover who I am and what I would like to do in life. The resolve that I was able to find was through journaling daily. This helped me figure out the "role" that I "play in society" because I was able to understand what I do daily that I like or do not like.

At this stage, a person is learning how to maintain and work hard for relationships or they will "suffer from isolation". I am learning to "make commitments" to my friends. This has been hard to do because my friends are away at school but part of the resolution is to try to keep in touch via text and making sure to make times to hang out when they are in town. Doing this will help me not feel isolated and learn how to keep a commitment to a person.

This stage is when an adult wants to make sure that they are "guiding the next generation". To make sure that I don't feel "stagnation" or personal impoverishment", I will resolve that issue by making sure to explain the importance of helping other people and helping the earth to my children. I could also help resolve the issue by joining a social group that or giving money to a charity or group that will help support the world in a positive way.

During this last stage, a person must "achieve acceptance of death". Which means that they understand that someday soon they are going to die but not to let it hang over there head and cloud their daily activities. When I come to this stage, the resolution to the issue of feeling "despair" will be to be close to God and to trust that each day I am doing what I am supposed to be doing and to not fear death. If I do not fear death than I will be able to go about life happy and enjoy each moment that I am given.
