Near the beginning of the book, Eliezer and his family are forced to shelter in homes after German troops entered Hungary in 1944. He is forcefully separated from the rest of his family with only his father able to accompany him, and while being transported through Germany-held territory to the death camp of Auschwitz. Because of that, Eliezer always sticks with his father whenever possible and won't leave him.  However, when his father passed, he feels like a burden has been lifted off of him. With the Germans losing, the resistance in the camp decided to make their move and drive the SS out of the camp. The book starts with Stefan trying to escape East Berlin through a harbor to see his family and friends. Later, he gets found and shot therefore leaving him dead. Marta, his younger sister, is now devastated. She also wants to escape but her mother keeps holding her back. Kurt, another character in the book, wants to run. Due to the Stasi gaining they despise their family but since his grandfather is in the Stasi, he is able to help his family with the Stasi problems. Fast forward, Marta escape from East Berlin, as well as Kurt's. Along with the massive crowds of people on the border.  Günter Schabowski, an official of the Socialist Union Party in East Germany held a quickly arranged conference and announced the free travel between East and West Germany. Hundreds of thousands of East Germans would make their way to the West, and demonstrators demanded reforms similar to those done in the Soviet Union. The author loops back to when East Germany was established when they were facing the threat of hundreds of thousands of Germans leaving. This is because, in the video, Reagan shows how the Berlin Wall separates everyone from their family. In the video, Reagan says, "...every man is a German, separated from his fellow men. Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar," (Reagan). This shows and expresses the essential question by saying how a lot of Germans were separated from their family and how it affected them by using a metaphor to show how their relationship with their family, impacted them. Reagan says that they should tear down this wall and stop it. Just one day after the Berlin Wall fell. The article talks about the events unfolding at the Berlin Wall, such as over 200,000 fleeing East Germans and a labor shortage happening in the GDR. Border police gave up and started to let the massive crowds on both sides travel across the border. There is also an account where one recalled, "I was a little girl when the Berlin Wall was built. It was terrible" (The Guardian). There is a lot of political instability inside East Germany after the opening of the wall with many people fleeing to the West.
