1. The marriage is more important to the wife because during this time women had no other way of making a living besides finding a good husband. He happiness, and life, depended upon finding a husband.
2. Jennings likely published the excerpt with a medical guide because the mother of the time would likely be the one taking care of the family and administering care when need be.
3. We do not think someone should focus on one's faults or solely on their excellencies either. There is an important balance to be held. If someone is making faults, they need to be made aware so they do not continue to make faults.
4. If it were written by a woman it would be more focused on the skills needed by a woman and how she is to take care of the family. If it were written today, it would not be as patriarchal and would seek equality.
5. In the past, man was seen as the dominant figure while women were at the mercy of the man. Over time, this has changed to have more equality between the two and there are still expectations, just not as many.

1. It was more important to the wife because if she didn't have a husband she would have almost nothing
2. For people marrying were most likely poor, so you would need the skills to climb the social ladder
3. It serves the purpose that it keeps the woman's "pride" in check, so she can continue to serve the husband
4. If it were written today, there would be a lot less patriarchal ideas - the woman wouldn't have to put herself down to serve the man
5. Women has been treated as inferior to men over time, but sexism is still a huge problem in this country - it has definently improved but it still requires a lot of work (Bible quote of women submitting to men)

Jennings writes about how wives must conform their actions and their attitudes to women to reduce stress. Jennings included this along with his medical guide because many women at the time married not for love, but for financial reasons and protection from bad conditions, like disease and dirty living. Jennings wants women to care more about making their man happy than their own well-being, a concept that has completely diminished since the publishing of this article. If this article were written by a women, it would preach more equality in the marriage, with each half of the couple having influence over the other. A modern woman would tell a newly married woman to take more control of the relationship and not cater to her husband so much; they need to look upon each other as equals. Neither side has any right to be above or below the other.

1. The author felt the wife was more dependent on the husband, as he was all she had. She had to please him in order to have a house, food, love, etc.

2. The author may have genuinely wanted to help women be successful in life, but wrote this through how he believed they could help the world. He wanted to help women help others but still did it through a sexist stand

1. It was more important to the woman because the women had more rules to follow and the man would have more freedom. For the time period we think it was normal and it does not surprise us.
2. The women were responsible for taking care of the family so this would help the woman to take care of injured children.
3. Yes the more you focus on the excellencies the more positive the environment but if you focus on the faults it’s going to bring people down. You should definitely be aware of red flags.
4. If It was written today it would not be very popular and would be criticized by society. Regarding the time period it might be similar but if a woman wrote the guide it would most likely be more accurate.
5. The woman is supposed to be in the background, and if she is the competent one in the relationship she needs to take care of things but make it out to be the man taking care of things making sure to preserve their manliness.

1.The author says the wife is dependent on the husband for everything, so if the husband leaves then he is fine while she is not. I do not agree because the times have changed and now both men and women are equal.
2.If it was in a medical guide, then the women seeing it would think more about it.
3.Its important to see both a persons excellencies and faults, because are equally important in
decision making. This line serves the purpose of finding the right person for you to be
in a relationship with.
4.The advice would be relatively the same because if a women wrote about this stuff
back then, then she would have to agree with the social norms.

1. The marriage was more important to the woman because she didn’t have any other outlet.
She had no social life or other curriculars. All that she had was her unfortunate husband
and her house to look after.

2. Likely because the goal is for them to one day get married reardless of their finaical status.
These rules for women were universal and applicable to all.

3. I think that this isn’t always the best thing because you often turn a blind eye to some things. You’re only trying to see the good things when
really there are some wrong and unjust things happening. I think that this line is used to show that women
were meant to just go with what they were told and behave the way this book says to.

4. If it was written by a woman I feel we would be less offended by it, even today. I also think the advice might include some
work arounds for how to “play by the rules” but not really follow them, just appear like you are. i think a woman’s perspective might offer more insight. If it was written today then it would be drastically different as many things have changed over the years.

5. Often men are said to be stronger, and the head of the household, the breadwinner. Women are
thought of as the house wife that stays home, takes care of the house, the cooking, the cleaning, and the kids. Over time as women’s education
expanded, so did the job opportunities for them and the roles of women in turn changed as well. “Nature has made the man stronger”

1. - she’s supposed to be the home maker
- to make him look good, she’s an accessory
- obviously do not agree
2.- He feels educated on the topic being a doctor
- The husband might get sick and she would then be in charge
3.- Focus on the good rather than the bad but also have a good balance because you need to know all things about that person
- The wife would just accept the man for his faults and focus on the good parts
4.- It would be the opposite, marriage should be on both parts in todays culture
- The wife back then it would be more helpful but along the same lines

5. back then the man was supposed to work and provide for the home and the woman was expected to take care of the home
- today woman bring in the money as well and men can also take care of the house, their are no boundaries
“let the whole business be properly adjusted, and then let the poor fellow go forward and seem to act like a man.”

i think because it was considered her duty, and like Ms. davala said- her only job. Also, there is a financial aspect, but he also makes it seem like the livelihood of women completely relies of the happiness of their husband, whereas the husband can find satisfaction from external sources, the women can only get it from their marriage.

maybe he thought poorer wives would be less educated on what their duties were, and He probably believes that this is the proper way for marriages to work and was trying to get the lower income wives to act the same.Thats possible, it also could be that he wants to demonstrate to women the importance of being adequate in healthcare as they must be able to keep their husbands happy and health to avoid "misery"

I think it's best to focus on the positive instead of negative, and i think that we should always try to put people up... BUT, there are faults that can be corrected, and there are things that are unacceptable, which in that case, would have had to be brought forward

1. The husband has other outlets but the author says that the wife only has the marriage, which is why it should be more important to her.

2. He could've done so in order to specify certain duties for poorer families. For example, he could've listed simple remedies for colds or fevers or the flu since poor families would be less likely to go to the hospital.

3. I think that there should be an equal focus on excellencies and faults. However, the focus on faults shouldn't be to dwell on them but instead focusing on whether the person is working to improve themselves. In this situation, it's clear that the purpose of his advice is to tell the wife to settle and to be there for their husband regardless.

4. I think that if this was written by a woman it would be more sympathetic to the wife as well as go into more detail about her duties. As for if it were written today, I honestly think it would be the same. The kind of people who would write these articles still think the same as people did hundreds of years ago. It's either that or it wouldn't be written at all.

5. The traditional role for men is to provide for their family monetarily ("nature has made the man stronger") while the women are supposed to stay home and cook, clean, and taking care of the kids. Now, women and men typically work and earn money for the household. Women no longer stay home, however, they are still typically in charge of taking care of the children and take care of the household.
