Percy struggles with internal conflict through the story. When he realizes his mom is pregnant he is scared he will miss the baby's entire life. He has worked so hard to get into the college of his choice but wonders if it was all a waste and he needs to stay home and support his mom and the baby. He fights this thought throughout the book and wonders if he is making the right choice or not.

Through out the novel, Percy learns he can not fight old age and has to embrace it. He has to grow and leave some things behind; even if it means his family and siblings for a period of time. This is a hard truth for him but he knows he will have to accept it.

In the story the god Iris, god of rainbows, lets Percy clean her silver staff in a very special river. When Percy is there he is attacked by snake like monsters. When Percy is about to be eaten the staff blast rainbows in every direction. The snakes are distracted by the pretty rainbow and follow Percy back to their home. In the book the rainbow represents beauty and prosperity.

In the end of the book Percy sneaks into the highest palace on Mount Olympus. This is Zeus palace. All over the palace Percy sees lighting bolts engraved or stitched into every thing. Zeus's mighty weapon is even a lightning bolt. This makes Percy afraid that Zeus will zap him to pieces. In the story the lightning bolt symbolizes Zeus's power and strength.
