In Iceland, the general traditions of Christmas are celebrated during December. But, one of the coolest things they do is called Jolabokaflod. This translates to "Yule Book Flood." On December 24, the tradition is to give someone a book to read through the long night to December 25. I stumbled on this gift giving tradition a few years ago, and my husband and I have added it to our winter holiday traditions because we love books so much!

The country i chose was Japan. A tradition they celebrate during December is Omisoka. Omisoka is celebrated on New Years eve. The tradition is that they eat toshikoshi-udon noodles that night that are long enough to cross over from one year to the next. After they eat these noodles, the Japanese go to the temple to pray for the new year. This tradition interested me because i love noodles and it is a different way of celebrating new years. Below is a picture of Toshikoshi-Udon, also known as "New Years Eve Noodles"

I chose Poland. In Poland they celebrate Advent and don't prepare for Christmas until the 24th when everyone buys there christmas tree and decorates it was a star on top. Then on the 24th they serve a 12 dish meal and then open presents. One of the dishes is a mandatory beet soup which everyone has to eat... But if you really despise it you can have mushroom soup instead! They also have a carp swimming in their bath tub which then the lady of the house has to butcher and cook. The most popular dessert is a poppy seed tart.
This holiday interests me because I have Polish friends who actually celebrate like this here!

The country I chose is Germany. Where I lived for multiple years overseas with my military family. A winter tradition for some individuals are to hike trails in Bodensee is a German name meaning Lake Constance. It is located in West Europe and is bounded by Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Three large bounds of water from different countries unite together sharing an amazing point of view. This traditional holiday interests me because I love to see beautiful places and to go on hikes. One day I hope to actually get the chance to walk these trails.

I would love to celebrate New Years in Ecuador. On this holiday in Ecuador they have a tradition where they write all of their "faults" or anything they want to get rid of or forget going into the new year on to a piece of paper. At midnight on New Years eve, they get a man made of straw and set him on fire. As soon as the clock strikes twelve they throw their paper lists into the fire. The man is dressed in clothes geared more for winter, so the man and all of the peoples lists should all burn together. This is a symbol of going into the new year in a fresh way. This holiday tradition interested my because I would love to visit this country and feel the weather down there, also this idea of starting fresh in the new year interested me the most.
