In Case of A Tie

When the United States first gained independence they gave specific instructions on how to select electors and presidents in Article 2, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution. During that time electors could vote for 2 different candidates and whoever lost would become vice president. But this led to controversies in the elections of 1796 and 1800. In response to this, Congress ratified the 12th Amendment. It clarified the processes of how electors vote. But it also clarified what to do in case of an electoral tie. In that case the House of Representatives chooses the President by ballot and the Senate chooses the Vice President by ballot. This is also used in case neither candidate wins 270 electoral votes.
