What do you think "makes" a serial killer? by Dr Ben Harkin

Do you think it is due to NATURE (e.g., genetics) and/or NURTURE (e.g., social deprivation) and/or is a person always responsible for their actions irrespective of nature or nurture?.

I personally think it’s nature and nurture. I feel that, to have the capability to feel that taking someone’s life is not wrong, a person must have a fault within the brain. But I also feel that social experiences, and background plays a massive part in ‘creating a serial killer’.

I think in the majority of cases, these people are responsible for their actions. Many people have issues in their past but don't do what they did. Also they spend so much time hiding their crimes, it shows that they know what they are doing.

I think that genetics can play a heavy role in people commiting certain crimes. Certain people may be born with the instincts to commit crimes. However, if an individual is brought up in certain environments this may increase or decrease their likelyhood in actually commiting crimes. If someone is told that certain actions are wrong this may limit them actually commiting such crimes. However, if that individual is told that certain actions are right this will only increase their likelihood of following through on acts they want to do. Genetics can't be changed but mindset can be altered if caught at an early stage.

I believe it could be both nature and nurture. to be able to take someone's life without thinking it's wrong could indicate a fault in the brain. Yet if they are brought up in certain environments, they learn that these actions are wrong and against the social norm.

I think that nature/genetics must play a part in being a serial killer as killing multiple people continuously with no remorse must indicate a genetic fault. Their brain's must work differently to others for them to be able to carry out the murder and then decide to do it again if they get away with it. However, I do believe nurture does influence the way we think and this combined with a genetic predisposition could cause someone to become a serial killer.

Adverse childhood experiences can have a detrimental effect on brain development. These experiences are also linked to anti-social personality disorder which in turn is strongly associated with serial killers. Research has also shown a genetic connection. Therefore I think that serial killers are ‘made’ by either childhood trauma or inherited genes or a combination of both.
