Psychological Lens
"In the short story, 'Where are You Going, Where Have You Been?', Joyce Carol Oates depicts a daughter who feels ostracized and unwanted by her resentful mother and indifferent father; her lonely feelings lead her to look for admiration and affection in unhealthy ways. This familial conflict ultimately demonstrates how pushing one's self towards adulthood can often lead to regret and an untimely loss of innocence. "

In the novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns," Khaled Hosseini follows the life of two Muslim females in Afghanistan who became forcibly married to the same man, who was both physically and verbally abusive (a common occurrence in Afghan households). Because of cultural and social norms for women according to Islamic Law, we are able to see how women are treated subserviently and lack basic human rights.

In Khaled Hosseini's novel "The Kite Runner" Amir's position socially above Hassan creates a stratification between the two, this stratification led to the maltreatment, both physically and mentally of Hassan, the forced removal of Hassan from Amir, and the tragic reconnection of Amir to his past, showing him that the social hierarchy cannot break the bonds of true friendship and family.

Historical Lens- Franny and Zooey (Caitlin, Hannah, Lizzy)

In 1950's America, conformity and patriarchal norms were extremely prevalent. This time lead into the era of conformity versus modernity. Throughout the story, Franny is coming into her power as an educated and potentially powerful woman. It is evident throughout the scene in which Lane and Franny share lunch that there is a struggle between the two. Historically speaking, the men in society are the providers, money makers, and the intellects. The text defy's these stereotypes, illustrating Lane to be a big- headed "Yale man," but with very little to offer. In contrast, Franny is an introspective and intellectual individual, trying to navigate a life of submission versus power.

Structuralism- Erin, Maddie, Dean In the book "The Great Gatsby", Fitzgerald initially structures his story in a way that leads the reader to believe Nick Caraway will be the primary focus of the novel. However, through the relationship between Gatsby and Nick it is revealed that Nick serves a utilitarian purpose rather than a meaningful purpose. Nick's character is never fully developed, and instead is used as a tool to highlight the complex world of Gatsby. Nick shows us the impoverished background of Gatsby, the unfulfilled dreams of Daisy, and the corrupt life Gatsby has made for himself. Nick's character allows the reader to discover all these qualities of Gatsby while not revealing anything about himself.
