This painting is notable for its dramatic depiction of the battle, which features a fiery explosion in the center of the canvas. The image is considered a masterpiece of naval art, and it captures the intensity and chaos of the battle while also showcasing the skill and bravery of the British forces. This connects to our book because the book takes place in 1957, during the Spanish War and the rule of General Fransisco Franco. This also shows the underlying secrets between the characters in the book and the art.

This article is about the Spanish War, also known as the Spanish Civil War. It was a conflict that took place in Spain from 1936 to 1939. It was fought between the Republicans, who were loyal to the democratically elected Spanish government, and the Nationalists, who were led by General Francisco Franco. The war was a result of political and social tensions between the two sides, and it had a profound impact on Spain and the rest of the world.

Our Woman in Moscow by Beatriz Williams was set in the same time period as Fountains of Silence by Ruth Sepetys, these books both are about women where a war was 'shadowing' behind them. They both have to lie and fake the truth to keep themselves safe but also to keep their lives private. They are both a high-action read, and they both have history, but also 'drama' between the books. However, in Fountains of Silence, the war was the Spanish Civil War and it is about the dictatorship Franco controls. In Woman in Moscow, the Cold War shadowed the book. The book was about a wife disappearing from her home, the world was confused about where they had gone, the question asked though, was "Were they eliminated by the Soviet intelligence service?" This question leaves people wondering where they went and what happened to them, they both talk about a war and are both packed with information about the wars. In the end, they both relate to each other about wars, but the plot between the two differ.

The book Fountains of Silence is primarily about the hidden violence of silence and unforgettable love. The story begins with a young man named Daniel who traveled to Spain alongside his father and mother, due to his father having an oil deal along with Spain's dictator (Francisco Franco). Daniel meets the maid named Ana in the hotel he is staying at and instantly falls for her. They undergo multiple different difficult occasions and overcome them. Within the story, too, numerous side characters contribute to the storyline to add more conflict. Puri, Ana's cousin, works at an orphanage and speaks about the secrets kept about children's adoption. Rafa, Ana's brother, helps his friend Fuga (a bullfighter), and Ana's family try to get out of the struggles they were put in by their parents being republicans. Julia, Ana's sister, doesn't contribute that much till the end of the story when they reveal her "miscarried" twin was actually Daniel's adopted sister after his mother could not have children. Nick VanDorn, a son of a US public affairs officer, helped Daniel with his choices and choosing the path of his heart. Lastly, Ben, a publisher, helped Daniel pursue his dream of being a journalist. After all of these characters contributed... the book reveals how they had secrets kept about themselves and silence was a key factor of their lives. Later in the book, Daniel chose to return back to Texas with his family, because of the drama that had made Ana want him to leave her alone. He stays there and continues his life until returning back after Franco's death, just to understand why silence was such a large impact on children of republican lives and secrets kept from others that had never been spoken upon. He still had feelings for Ana, and therefore in the end they got the dream they wanted before, and that was to be together happily.

Francisco Franco was a Spanish military general who ruled over Spain as a dictator for 36 years. He used torture, imprisonment, and execution to maintain his power. This picture is a very good example of how Franco used his power against the citizens of Spain. It shows that his power has the ability to control and scare the community. He implied strict censorship laws and controlled the media. Franco's dictatorship was characterized by repression, violence, torture, and controlment.

Representation

As Ana was a daughter of two republican parents, within the book she spoke upon the unfair treatment towards her and her family because of their beliefs. She showed how women were publicly humiliated and had their heads shaved. There were also some more serious scenes where she spoke about how Republicans were kept in prisons/camps, so they did not speak about their beliefs and therefore silence was key in staying safe within Spain. Overall, this ended up as the Spanish Civil War, as the book indicates. As a website speaking on this topic shows, "The fighting and persecution resulted in several million Spaniards being displaced. Many fled areas of violence for safe refuge elsewhere". This quote shows that because of two different beliefs, it led to war and innocent republicans being in refugee camps, or killed for no particular reason. In conclusion, Ana and her family showed true representation of how Republicans were treated.

The book 'Shadow of the wind' is set in the aftermath of the Spanish war, in Barcelona. The story follows a young boy named Daniel and his journey about wanting to learn from his history while following his interests. Along the way he meets lots of interesting characters and navigates through the political change of post-war Spain. Alike to Fountains of silence, both books are set in Spain and explore the country's history and culture. Both books deal with secrets and hidden truths that are uncovered over the course of the story. They explore the impact of the Spanish war and how it effected the everyday life of ordinary people. Each book provides a different sense of what life was like in Spain during these time periods. Both books touch on themes of political oppression, social inequality and the struggle for freedom and justice.
