Thus began a long journey ahead. 

Lina, Jonas, and her mother make their way north, crossing the Artic Circle, to work in camps in Siberia.  They are forced to dig for beets and try to survive in treacherous conditions. While at a camp called Turaciak, she meets a boy name Andrius. To keep Andrius alive, his mother is forced to become a prostitute. While in Turaciak, Lina and other women become tormented after they refuse to sign papers. These papers stating that they are criminals and will serve 12 years of hard labor. After 10 months, Andrius learns that groups of people are being sent to the Circle. Lina, Jonas, and her mother, Elena, are on the list to go to the Arctic Circle. When they arrive, they discover no shelters and are given only a small piece of bread daily. Lina, Jonas, and Elena are assigned to group eleven, where they find out that Lina and Jonas's father has been executed. Elena hold on to he hope that he is still alive, but shortly after she passes away. This makes Lina and Jonas orphans. However, a little girl finds a dead owl and they have a feast. Jonas grows ill from malnutrition. Lina is surprised when doctors knock on the door of the shack. This would mean that they are rescued. Though they are rescued, Lina still hopes to reunite with Andrius. In the end, she buries a note from 1954 and is not found until 1995. She comes off as very headstrong. She loves t be around her family. Before being taken, she was as accepted into art school. She loves drawing and writing.  She keeps her hope alive by drawing and writing when she is in the camps. She eventually ends up marrying Andrius.
Jonas Vilkas- Jonas is Lina's ten year old brother. He has blonde hair and is very time.   He clings to his mothers side because he is afraid something will happen to her.  He becomes friends with Andrius who teaches him to smoke. At that time, he starts to make shoes. He gets sick and has to nursed back to health.
Andrius Arvydas- Andrius is 17 years old. He has wavy brown hair, and blue eyes. He stays close to his mother because he is very protective of her. When they reach Altai, Andrius's mother is made to sleep with the guards or they would kill Andrius. He sneaks extra food to Jonas to give to his family and their friends around the camp. He keeps all Lina's drawings when she goes to the Arctic Circle. He eventually marries Lina.

Lina, Jonas, and their mother are forced with the challenges of working at a camp.  They are forced to live with an old, grouchy woman, who does not treat them well.  Most of the day, they would dig for beets and be victims of the guards. 

When Elena finds out that her husband was executed, she hopes it is not true.   She slowly starts to lose hope and starts to wilt away.  She does this all in front of her children, Lina and Jonas. She dies and leaves her children orphans.
