Sudan breaks up! South Sudan secedes from Sudan and form their own country, South Sudan. This is due to the division between Muslim in the north and Christians in the South.

1960

This is a big year of Africa! A total of 14 countries break free from their original powers and form their own countries. However, some of these countries break out into civil war while others struggle to keep their citizens healthy and happy.

South Africa celebrates the first black president they have! Nelson Mandela fought for equal rights in South Africa. He fought for the end of apartheid.

Late 1940's to 1970s

The people of Africa begin to question why the fight for the freedom of others when they, themselves, do not have freedom. This is the time period in which revolutions start occurring and countries break free from the hold of their colonizing powers. The two exceptions are Ethiopia and Liberia because they were never colonized.

1884-1885

The Berlin Conferance occurs. The Europeans divided up Africa and made sure there would be no conflicts between the colonizing powers. However, they gave no regard to the ethnic groups and split many up as well as forcing many conflicting group to liv together.

1750-1800s

The Industrial Revolution begins in Europe! The need for slaves go down thanks to machines, but many people still own them. This is also around the time when Europe starts putting bans in slavery. These bans are hard to enforce because slaves still make good money and slavery is not illegal.

1500s-1700s

The Europeans started exporting slaves. These slaves were used in America and Europe alike and were used because of the free price and the ide a that black or colored people were lower than white people. This will last for a large period of time.

1400s

The original European arrival was to establish trade routes. The trade routes established were mostly on the coasts. There was no real colonization.
