For some learners, it is really important to their success for the learner to feel known and cared for. For others, this is less important. Sometimes, the people who need it most don't initiate the relationship and so it can be difficult to tell. That said, as we are dealing human-to-human and with minors, the default should be warm demander and with out online structure there need to be opportunities built in for relationship building.

Expanding further on Owain's points, I think check-ins with students is key to ensure that they are actively engaged with the course material. The flexibility of online learning poses both pros and cons for students. We have discussed in Day 3's module the benefits, but as teachers we know that flexibility for students without accountability does not always lead to a fruitful learning experience. For this reason, I believe online teachers have the added responsibility of check-ins to ensure students are thriving and achieving their academic goals. ~ J. De Jesus
