It is also challenging to know what level to pick for read alouds since you are supposed to pick more complex. But how complex should it be?

Students struggled with understanding the text because lack of previous knowledge and knowing specific vocabulary. We could support this challenge with a reading guide that gives a brief description of the event and definitions for challenging words throughout.

Some challenges students face that I have seen in practicum is misunderstanding of the text, having trouble reading the text, and lack of comprehension skills. Some scaffolding I have seen is an interactive read aloud to provide more comprehension support after.

My practicum read Paul Bunyan and before we read he introduced vocabulary that they then had to listen for and give a thumbs up when they heard it. Also while he read, he was thinking aloud and modeling how to think about exaggerations.

Many students struggle with remembering what happened throughout the story when doing an activity post reading. Chunking would be great for the students to break the story up for them so they are not having to remember so much of the story all at once.

My practicum students read a historical fiction story in their textbook called Rent Party Jazz during their unit on theme and storyline. This was a long story with a lot of pieces and it was difficult for multiple students to understand. I liked the idea of using a concept map or graphic organizer so that they can pull ideas out of the text and make sense of how it all fits together.

We decided to break the book into chunks and only read the pages that pertain to Greece and Rome. The book comes with definitions for the difficult words and we also plan to use this as an interactive read aloud stopping to ask questions.
