Research has shown that Latina girls (ages 12-17) are the largest group of minority girls in the country. They are more likely than their non-Hispanic peers to face the four most serious threats to achieving success: depression, pregnancy, substance abuse and becoming a high school drop out. One non-profit organization that aims to empower these young Latinas is a Texas-based non-profit organization called Latinitas. It offers a variety of enriching experiences for girls to discover their voice; develop media and technology skills; strengthen their confidence, self-esteem, and cultural identity; be prepared for higher education; promote leadership development and social justice advocacy; and explore STEM careers to be prepared to enter the 21st century workforce.

I would like to study the specific effects that an outreach program such as Latinitas has on helping alleviate the disparities and underrepresentation of minority women in STEM career fields as well as find out what strategies are working and what they and other organizations can improve on.

Research Approach and Rationale

The research approach I think would work well with my topic is the transformative approach because I am hoping this research will not only confront the social oppression many women, especially women of color face but will also offer a solution to the existing problem and give a voice to the participants who often don't get a chance to be heard. Specific issues will need to be addressed that speak to important social issues, such as empowerment, inequality, oppression, domination, etc. (Creswell, p. 9).

My research on this topic would probably involve a mixed methods design because I am curious in learning of students' attitudes and opinions but I am also interested in collecting data using surveys or interviews with young women who have participated in the Latinitas program.
