The main character, Mathilde,  continually expresses her longing to live a luxurious life and admired and courted by rich men.When the couple were invited to a ball, Mathilde had a dress but believed she also needed some jewelry or else she'll look poor. When Mathilde lost the necklace, her husband and her went into debt, trying to buy a replacement for her friend. Mathilde finally experiences the pauper lifestyle and had to work and save up every dollar to pay the debt. This went on for ten years until the debt was paid. One day, when Mathilde meet Mme. Forestier, she finally reveals the story. Mme.
