The majority of people moved to Natal around the 1860s. However, the first Indian people to arrive in Natal did so in 1849. A lot of people were forced to move because of the increasingly popular sugar trade happening. They would be used as slaves for their captors. Around the same time, a total of 143,939 Indians migrated to Trinidad to be used for labor. When their contract ended, most of them chose to remain in Trinidad to make a life for themselves.
