In my music padlets I have looked at the genres of Jazz, Funk and hip hop, these 3 genres directly link to one another with Jazz influencing funk which in turn both influenced the hip hop movement.
These 3 genres all rose out of different time periods and had different political and cultural influences surrounding them which I believe I have addressed.
These are easily my 3 favorite genres of music with the absence of soul, the msuic in all time periods provided clues as to what the black and ethnic communities of America where going through, they bled their hearts into the music and have given us amazing gifts of strong passionate music that will leave a mark on the world forever.
Thank you!

Jazz emerged in the early 1900s and quickly evolved many sub genres and spread across the world, there's smooth jazz, swing, big band Jazz and Ethiopian jazz to name a few. The genre survived through 2 world wars with black musicians offering light relief to a country under siege, however many Jazz artists suffered during this time because of being draft into the army during the height of their careers. Jazz is still as relevant today as it ever was and it's influences can be heard throughout modern music, Funk music and Hip hop as I will mention next owe Jazz a dept of gratitude.

Funk really began in the sixties taking influences from jazz and mixing it with rock and psychedelia, again it was another evolution in black music and crossovers between funk and jazz where common place, Funk was crazy and wacky, it was the African American answer to the hippy free love movement. the music included commentary on Vietnam, human rights marches, drugs and impoverished black America, a famous example of this was the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. At a James Brown concert in Boston the concert goers heard news of King's death, James Brown spoke to the audience and told them to remain calm and not to take to the streets and riot as this would only make black people look worse, its a legendary story from James browns career, Boston was one of the only cities in America that night which remained calm. you can read a more in depth version of the story here: http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/james-brown-calms-boston-following-the-king-assassination
Funk is one of my favourite genres and it would go on to influence hip hop

Hip hop music had its begging in the 70's taking influence from funk and jazz music, again this was another musical genre with political and cultural commentary on black struggles with police, drugs, gang violence and as many other issues as you could count, the rapid fire lyrics allowed the artists to tell more complex stories and say a lot more than the previous genres of jazz and funk. Hip hop also took the fashion world by storm with brands such as fubu and the wu tang clans Wu-wear brand being established in the 90's, today hip hop dance classes are a dime a dozen and pop music has obvious influences from hip hop, which had influence from funk and jazz which was influenced by the blues.
