DANGER OF A SINGLE STORY

Dated Entry: September 12th, 2017

LEARNING OBJECTIVE # 1
We have aligned ourselves with truths that were told to us by the European Colonialists and accepted that as the end all and be all. History and Social Studies textbooks up to the high school level were written mostly by misinformed men, thereby creating a false and/or incomplete images and experiences of life in the Caribbean prior to Columbus' rediscovery of the islands. The legacy of poverty and primitiveness was the "single story" of the Caribbean people. In the administered history books at these levels the single story of life before Columbus presented such barbaric, uncivilized, misinformed, descriptions of the life and beliefs of the Amerindians. From the misguided point of view of the Occident, the Amerindians were labelled and stereotyped. Books highlighted that they were uncivilized because they didn't wear clothes, couldn't read or write, and spoke a different language. However, positive attributes , such as strength, structured organization (strategic appointment of chiefs) and high morality, sexual division of labor along with skillful craftsman ship, were strategically omitted throughout history. Due to the order and advancement in technology by the Europeans, they deemed themselves as superior and "civilized" which led them to believe that they had the authority to alter the lives of the Amerindians who were "uncivilized" and thus began our "Single Story." The following artifact was instrumental in my understanding of one civilization being merely different from another but in no way better....Dr. Campbell. Pleanery one.

Caribbean people should never underestimate the value of independence and sovereignty that they enjoy today. The struggles and sacrifices that our forefathers bore should always serve as a reminder of where we came from, who we are and where we’re going. Caribbean Civilization, through revisionism, allow us to travel through our history, by the re-telling of the past, as genuine artefacts bring new revelations as to what actually occurred and allow us to re-examine our ideas and reassess the information previously accepted as the God given truth. This portfolio represents my journey of learning throughout the course and embodies the facts and feelings on issues of importance. It will give emphasis to four objectives. These objectives are 1. Critical Thinking on an issue of importance to Caribbean Civilization. 2. Application of learning in Caribbean Civilization to students understanding of their social or geographical environment. 3. Application of learning to the course to understanding a problem of Regional importance as reflected in news and current affairs literature/programs in the region. 4. Self-Evaluation of learning for the semester.

Dated Entry : October 31st, 201

Learning Objective # 2

Having completed this course, I now fully understand and grasp how Christianity (Roman Catholicism) became the dominant religion of the Caribbean.

In the history of religion, Roman Catholicism (Christianity), was the predominant religion in the world due to the dispersion of their teachings. Christianity was viewed as a hegemonic religion, that is, Christian values and beliefs dominated all aspects of society including the social, political and economic spheres.

However, the concentration of power, wealth, and privilege under Christian hegemony accumulates to the ruling class and the predominantly white male Christian power elite that serve its interests. This was evident during chattel slavery when the Europeans converted the Africans to Christianity in a very inhumane manner.

Prior to being plagued with the Christian morals and teachings, the Africans had their own religion, beliefs and value systems. For example, Yoruba and Spiritual Baptist religion.

The Europeans conditioned and programmed the Africans to believe in Christianity and the hierarchical structure of their own religion. At present, there are many Africans who classify themselves as Christians due to the history of our people.

Learning Objective #4

Dated Entry : November 11th, 2017

At the beginning of this course, based on what I was told by many past students, i didn't know what to expect. I was told from some that the course was hard, the course was easy and some even said it was "aight". with all of these conflicting thoughts, i entered with the expectation of the course being difficult and complicated only to realize that it was neither hard nor complicated but just different.

It was very different from any other course that i had taken. The difference began with the plenary sessions that were conducted. Prior to this course, I had never heard of plenary sessions before so I was slightly confused as to how that would go..how it would work out? I must say that it worked out WELL... Classes were so convenient and such a pleasure. As a working mother, many unexpected things are quite likely to happen and being ale to access the sessions made it possible for me to always be up to date with all of the lectures and tutorials.....not to mention that it made my university life much easier and a bit stress free.

With advantages comes disadvantages, there were some hiccups with the recordings and I found that it was better to attend the live lecture rather than download it due to technical difficulties. . Additionally,
I personally found the music videos were annoying and unnecessary (no offence).

With regard to content of this course, it absolutely blew my mind. I was astonished by the events and experiences that occurred in the past, which in most instances account for the present. My admiration for and perspective of the Europeans changed completely. It was then I realized that their attempt to "whiten" the mind of black people and brand them to believe that being white is superior was so powerful and successful, that at times I conformed to their ways of thinking.

This course empowered me emotionally and politically. Some of the things that stood out to me the most during the semester were Civilization and The Indirect Rule.( Lord Lugard) . That, today, the mass destruction inflicted by the Indirect Rule, stands sovereign in the Caribbean region.

Dated Entry : November 1st, 2017

Hispaniola, is one of the four largest islands in the Greater Antilles, in the North Western portion of the Caribbean Sea.
An artificial border splits the island of Hispaniola into two, which we know as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. In their history, there was basically a war between the Spanish and French over the island. They then negotiated to share the country into two as aforementioned. There was a time when the split between the two countries was drawn with blood. The 1937 Parsley Massacre is widely regarded as a turning point in Haitian-Dominican relations.

According to Border of Lights, "The massacre cemented Haitians into a long-term subversive outsider incompatible with what it means to be Dominicans." The migration of the Haitians into Dominican Republic is the leading contributor to the tension between the two countries as well as illegal immigration from Haiti. The government has described it as a cleansing" of the country's immigration rolls. The islands are divided by language, race and economic issues.

Today, the issues being experienced can be traced back to Colonialism. The ethnic composition of the Dominican Republic is approximately 77% mixed, 16% white and 11% black. By contrast, Haiti is approximately 95% black. In the Republic, social class is based upon race - even darker skin Dominicans are being stereotyped as being poor and, uneducated. Currently, Anti-Haitian feelings are strongly expressed by the Dominicans as they feel that Haitians are invading their space and are the cause of high crime rate and unemployment.

In present news, things are as strained on the island as they have been in years. The Dominican government was expected to gather the Haitians to be shipped to the border.

The both countries continue to be divided by history, language, culture and race.
