Key Facts - People were killed in the camp. His father was being beaten in front of him. His father was hopeless felt like he was running out of time to live.

Mood - Hopeless "It's over. God no longer with us“. Another detail is "He was alive. He had passed his second selection. He has still proved his usefulness."

Theme -  Faith because Eliezar had a difficult time dealing with his faith and could not believe how God could let such horrific things happen to the Jews  and eventually did pray without really putting his heart into the words he spoken.

Character Traits - He felt sad and hopeless. One detail '' As part of the evacuation they are forced to run for 12 miles under heavy snow with no breaks''. (103). Another detail ''Elie and his father go through ´´selection´´- left or right, live or right, live or die''. ( 34).

During the part of the journey when they are running the Prisoners are either shot by the SS men or trampled to death by other prisoners and their corpses are left behind . Rabbi Eliahu (another prisoner) asks them where his son is and later Elie realizes the Rabbi’s son saw his father and left him behind. Elie fears he might do the same when his father was close to death. When they arrived at the new location  all the prisoners were forced into one cell .

Mood - It was full of despair .  “A small red flame … A shot … Death enveloped ”  (Wiesel 91) .   “People trod over numbed bodies, trampled wounded faces ”   (Wiesel 93) .   

Theme -   When people are in a difficult situation, they will have the urge to give up .

Character Traits -  Afraid “What if he had wanted to be rid of his father? He had felt his father growing weaker and, believing that the end was near, had thought by this separation to free himself of a burden that could diminish his own chance for survival” (Wiesel 91) .
Hopeless:  "I can't go on" (Wiesel 86) .
