What is prenatal hydronephrosis?
Hydronephrosis is a common condition for fetal that consists of the swelling of one or both kidneys due to a blockage of urine in the passage.
Diagnosing Hydronephrosis

Hydronephrosis is observed through an ultrasound. Continuous ultrasounds called renal ultrasounds are composed so that the urology team may gain a more complete understanding of the hydronephrosis and monitor the child’s condition. From this diagnosis there are many possible outcomes. For Jacob I was told kidney could be normal when he was born, he could possibly stay with a dilated kidney with limitations, he could go through surgery, and there was a chance that his kidney could not be saved and would be left with one kidney and have limitations throughout his life.

Often when a child is born hydronephrosis goes away, meaning the kidney drains to its regular size. In other cases where the kidney remains dilated a treatment in order to drain the urine takes place. A thin tube called a catheter is inserted into the bladder in an attempt to drain the urine. Since there is a blockage in the passage, a surgical procedure is done in order to clear the passage.

The surgical procedure used to repair a blockage of the kidney is called a robot assisted pyeloplasty. This surgery is commonly done to remove what is called utereopelvic junction obstruction (UPJ). During a robotic assisted pyeloplasty surgeons use tiny cameas and insert them through a tiny incision to remove narrow part of the obstruction and the healthy portions are reconnected to a drainage system. This system will take about two to three weeks to drain out the urine through a tube. The child remains in the hospital for two or three days.

After surgery, the child wear two diapers for about two to three weeks. During those two weeks the incision is healing and the kidney is draining. The child uses diaper for their regular movements and another one over where a small hose connected to their kidney is draining the urine. During the follow up appointment the doctor removes the drainer by pulling it out. a small hole, which needs to remain dry, will heal after about a week.

Asking as many questions as possible will help them through this process. Also reading articles about it from different medical doctors might help.
