Fossil Butte National Monument was set aside to protect one of the richest fossil deposits in the world. 52 million years ago, a subtropical landscape dominated what is now southwest Wyoming. A lake, aptly named Fossil Lake, was home to millions of aquatic animals, and a refuge for an abundance of land plant and animal species. Because of the lack of predators and oxygen in the mostly static lake, organisms were able to settle on the lakebed floor undisturbed as they were slowly covered in sediment.
Millions of years later, the current cold, dry, sagebrush environment is in stark contrast to the warm and humid ecosystem of the past. Paleontologists have been excavating fossils for more than a hundred years, and have uncovered millions of perfectly preserved fossils from the lake environment, providing us with a true “Aquarium in Stone.”
The fossil bearing layers of the Green River and Wasatch formations have produced more than 30 species of birds, more than 300 species of plants, around 30 species of fish, plus extremely rare mammal, reptile, and insect fossils. There is a 13-foot crocodilian, a 5-foot turtle, paddlefish, stingrays, palm fronds, damselflies, miniature horses, snakes, invertebrates, and so much more. The Bloodiest Day in American History--Hope for Freedom

23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia's first invasion into the North and led Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

In addition to the historical events that happened here, Antietam Battlefield encompasses over 3,250 acres of farmland, pastures, woodlots and limestone forests. The areas in natural cover at the battlefield offer a haven for many different species of plants and animals
