This level contains six videos broken into several sets. The first set of three videos focuses on -ee, -ea, -ai, and -ay. Students begin with a “Before the Read” video, where they learn about the long vowel sounds that these vowel teams make. The work is then contextualized in the next two videos, where students read long e and long a words in books. The end of each of the last two videos focuses on retelling, and students will work on ensuring that their retells now include a problem and solution structure.The next set of videos continues the work with vowels. The “Before the Read” video teaches students that the word ending y can have the long i or long e sound. This concept is visited again in the next video, where students apply their new knowledge of the ending y. At the end of that read, students also practice working with other words that end with y, this time adding inflectional ends. Students’ work at this level ends with another video where they’ll read a book, this time after being introduced to the -ew vowel team.Across this entire level, look for students’ knowledge of vowels both in context and out of context to increase, and for students to also practice multiple different ways of retelling.

This level contains five videos broken into several sets. The first set of two videos, Little Dragon Boats, will explicitly teach phonics work at the beginning of the video. In the first video, students will learn that the letter c has two sounds, the hard and soft c and will practice reading words that begin with shr-. In the second video, students are explicitly taught silent consonant letter combinations, like wr- in wrist and -st in castle. To set up the comprehension work across Little Dragon Boats, students are provided background knowledge of The Dragon Boat Festival, which is a traditional holiday in Chinese culture. As students read they will be prompted to not only follow the story development, but also what they are learning from the text.The next set of videos starts with a “Before the Read” phonics video that will anchor the work they will do across the text, Rodeo Under the Sea. The “Before the Read” video explicitly teaches multiple r-controlled vowel spelling patterns. Students will pay close attention to the r-controlled vowels that appear across the text. In the final video, students are coached to use the phonics they have learned to read multisyllabic words, reading across the word from left to right, breaking it into parts based on their phonics knowledge. This becomes especially important as students move into higher levels. Comprehension continues to be supported by retelling sequentially and how characters are feeling.
