Gabon suffered immensely under European occupation. The Dutch, English, and French have annexed the territory and operating slave trading. Despite its independence because of the immense colonization and devastation, Gabon is still struggling to rebuild itself. Due to colonization and the slave trade in Gabon, the original Byeri Reliquary, a sculpture known to preserve ancestors' remains, was forbidden by the European colonizers that settled. The one seen here is an altered Byeri with fewer cultural features. Unfortunately, these toned-down and "westernized" versions of the statues are the only ones that remain. I chose to have this work featured in my map because Gabon was amongst the first countries in Africa to be devasted in the slave trade, and now this Gabonese artifact is located in the last place to end slavery, Texas.

Aimé Mpane's "Congo: Shadow of a Shadow" is a human representation of Congo's literal and emotional state due to colonization, devastated. This statue displays the torture, pain, and sorrow that still lingers today in the Congo. I chose to feature this work on my map because it is located in Belgium, and Belgium is the country that colonized and oppressed Congo, the country that this statue represents.

The Nigerian people of Benin state created these brass plaques. This plaque is the artwork of their Kingdom featuring the chief and his attendees. I chose to display this artwork in England because they destroyed the Kingdom through their Nigerian conquest colonization. The Benin kingdom was completely destroyed, and all artwork of this nature was taken to England, given to the queen and auctioned off. Today this artwork is located in many English museums for many to view.

I have chosen to display this photo on the map because the work of art displayed was funded by the Kaiser of Germany in return for the old throne of King Njoya. King Njoya graciously gave the requested throne to the Kaiser in exchange for money to pay for a new one and a German officer’s uniform. I displayed the photo in Germany because the photo was taken by a German photographer who took the photo back to Germany to present to the Kaiser. Sadly, in giving up his old throne to the Kaiser of Germany, Cameroon fell under Germany’s power and became one of its colonies.
