Using the word chandelier adds a positive and sophisticated mood to this section of the story.  
The author used the phrase fancy chandelier so we can learn how Esperanza's great-grandfather views her great-grandmother. We learn that he loved her and really wanted to marry her. He values her and sees her as a delicate, elegant, desirable woman. The message would have been significantly different if the author said, “As if she were a sack of potatoes.”

Meg feels lost and some things reminds her about Oscar and then she can't concentrate. It is tough without Oscar and everything is different without him for her. 
In school she has been very off topic and has been struggling a lot more. This conflict affected the characters because Oscar was a friend to everyone and could always tell when someone is not feeling good. Meg thought it was magic and was always confused how he knew when someone is feeling down. People said Oscar always fixes everything and problems that are happening throughout their lives.

another piece of figurative language is when Meg said, "a new feeling settled on the room a feeling that didn't have any resentment or stress in it.
