A group of German teens eventually named themselves the Edelweiss Pirates. This group consisted mostly of boys and few to no girls. They let their hair grow long, wore checkered shirts and white socks, and did anything that was the opposite of the attire of the Hitler Youth Squads. The Edelweiss Pirates did anything that opposed Hitler's idea of German youth.

They were tired of being told what to do, how to act, and what to think. These teens rebelled, both culturally and politically, listening to American music, growing their hair long, and eventually graduating to sabotage.

How They Were Dealt With

Depending on the region, police waved them away. In other areas where officials were more concerned, the Pirates would be detained and beaten, and their heads shaved to send a message to other teens who decided to rebel. On a more severe level, pirates were being captured and tortured, then sent to "re-education" camps. In October 1944, he captured 13 agitators, including seven Pirates, and marched them to the gallows in the middle of Cologne. All prisoners were hanged in full view of the public.

One of the Edelweiss Pirates that survived. After the war broke out, she refused to join the League of German Girls, but instead joined a group that sang, hiked, and spoke out politically. Many arrests followed. In December 1942, Gertrud Koch was taken to Brauweiler Gestapo prison, where she was beaten and mistreated. In May 1943, she was released from prison without being told a reason, and fled to southern Germany with her mother. From there, she worked on a farm and moved back to Cologne until the war ended.
